Thanks to Big Tiki Jeff for sending me this link:

I love this band. However, I hadn't heard this one yet until Jeff sent it. It's a perfect marriage of surf and ska, but I think the guitar solo in the middle is a bit weak.
These guys are the Surf Coasters of the ska scene.

Kristena, that was AMAZING!! I loved it! Those Japanese...
Ivan
Ivan, those guys are very entertaining indeed. If you visit You Tube, they have about 3 pages of videos. I'm going to find another for you that I like. It's their cover of the jazz classic "Caravan," although in ska, they call it "Skaravan" oftentimes.

OMFG!
Tena rocks so hard.
The video was posted by Daoster, a SF bay area ska guy going to school down in Socal. He has a good ska podcast on podOmatic.

Damn! I love that so, so much! If there was no surf music (perish the thought!), I think I would have been a very happy camper playing in a ska band! That's just so freakin' cool...
How the hell do you keep a 10-piece band together? It seems like it would be impossible...
Keep it coming, Kristena! Thanks!!

Alright, I hate to be negative but this is kinda pathetic, so if your Japanese and you toss a few glissandos in your song it is genius? Heck La Vida Loca has a glissando, if Ricky Martin came from Japan would it be cool? We have great Ska in fresno... Let's Go Bowling, and Los Hooligans to name a couple... and they would kick ass on these guys.

I think they just like the music, man. I don't think it's just because it's Japanese, either.

I'm not a ska afficionado (sp?) by any stretch, nor am I partial to Japanese bands soley for the sake of their being Japanese. I just happen to think that tune kicks ass. If you have suggestions for more ska bands that that serve it up surf-style, or vice versa, I'd love to take a listen.

Really didn't mean to make it sound racist, I am just saying that it ain't nothin specia. I think sometimes the country of origin plays a role in the cool factor. And I gotta admit the Japanese culture is beyond cool. But in a blind taste test I don't think that particular song would fare well.
just my two cents.

I love Los Hooligans. Nonetheless, I did not post this to compare ska bands. This has nothing to do with the fact that TSPO are from Japan either. My original post was to demonstrate how a few riffs that could be perceived as surf were thrown into a song by a band otherwise known for ska. I, for one, love this band and was happy to see something like that. I know I am not the only one here that frequents surf and ska shows. Maybe "La Vida Loca" would be good if there was a glissando in it and Ricky Martin didn't sing. sarcasm

Same here, actually. A friend of mine that photographs a lot of ska and hardcore shows went to one of the HB Pier shows a few weeks back. We were discussing how many of the same tunes were covered by both genres.
I had a chance to see the Volcanics with a ska band called the Allentons once. That was a great show for me.

Anyone remember the name of the song that was on that video (that YouTube has subsequently removed)? I've been trying to find it with no success
