Hey Spud,

Sorry I never got back to you. We are indeed a tight trio and have a long history together.

But I'd love to meet up and see what's up.

CHECK IT OUT!!!

Hey, no problem and welcome to the site huh! I don't know about you, but I was searching for 'surf' music and stumbled over this place a few months ago.

Good music, great topics and a decent bunch to hang out out with, you can't ask for much more.

If you want to have a bash, PM me and we'll hash something out.

For sure,

I'm only new to the site. Been into surf for years but only just got a group together.

This site is awesome cause like you it's hard to find like minded surf people around here

down like a lead balloon. Rolling Eyes

Isn't that similar to what Keith Moon said to Jimmy Page when he formed the New Yardbirds

I think you're right, he came up with a variation - Led Zeppelin - the rest they say is history.

Great to see people linking up on surf music in Australia. Anyone near Wollongong?, I'm just south of there.
Back to Midnight Oil and Surf music, their instrumental 'Wedding Cake Island' may have helped put them into the genre, a superb tune and worth covering.
The Living End are another awesome Australian band and do a great Hoodoo Guru song 'Leilani', it has an excellent surf sound. I loved seeing Hoodoo Gurus live, one particular gig had them and INXS and sooo many other bands playing an outdoors gig at Engadine, 1984-85 I think. The wind was blowing when Hoodoo Gurus came on. They had their mohair jumpers on, hair blowing everywhere. INXS came on and it poured.
Cruel Sea and Dan Rumour who are also on the Delightful Rain compilation Spud mentions also have a strong surf link, with 'Down below' sound so good.
The Sunny Boys were another Australian 80s band that had a few tunes with a surf influence. I wonder if it is that so many Australians live quite close to the coast and that the surf culture is quite strong?

If any Aussie surf musicians are reading this thread I'm still looking to form an Instrumental Surf Band

Hey Marty,
I'd sure like to get together with someone else who can play surf music, nothing much happening around here at the moment.

I suppose you're planning a 600 mile trip about as soon as I am this year huh, well you never know how these things work out.

Good luck from a 48yr old Jazzmaster playing rhythm sometimes lead player.

Aloha Bruce

I'm not planning any big trips right now, no money, I went Hawaii last school holidays where I bought a Am Deluxe HSS LT Strat with a locking bridge (its in my avatar picture) for my 50th birthday . its got a great sound and feel.

Sorry i don't live in Brisbane, but as this thread has become a bit of a roll-call of SG101 members in Australia, i'd like to join the party!

My name is Alex and i have a surf/instro band in Canberra. We have a myspace at http://www.myspace.com/spacepartysurfband at the moment it only has a few demos on it so i haven't been plugging it too much, there will be new recordings on there in the next couple of weeks.

Hi Alex,
Good to hear from you. I live down on the South Coast at Gerringong. Seems like we are all seperated by a few hours.
Cheers

Thank you - Gerringong, i'm sure i've been there, near Kiama isn't it?

We have some new songs on our myspace now:

The first 2 songs are new stuff we recorded at a friend's studio, just mixed them today.

Hi Alex,
10 minutes south of Kiama. I'll look forward to checking out your myspace.
Have fun

CHECK IT OUT!!!

Hey Cam,

Noooooo!

Have another go.

It worked for me.

I'll have some more up really soon.

CHECK IT OUT!!!

Add me to the Aussie -who- likes- surf -guitar list - from way down South Australia; let me know if you're passing through!

I was very very fortunate to see 'live' Midnight Oil, Hoodoo Gurus, Hunters and Collectors (even got to be a roadie for them one night - friendly people), Paul Kelly and Mental as Anything...and The Atlantics of course (the new line up). I don't think I knew at the time how 'classic' a lot of these bands were.

There is a real strong 'surf' element in all these bands. I think it's in our beach psyche (I hope that is how you spell 'psyche') Rolling Eyes

Jim Moginie has this site as well as Jimmoginie.com.
He is currently on tour abroad.

You guys ever heard of Ebb Tide & The Shorebreakers (members from Midnight Oil - Jim Moginie, Rob Hirst & Martin Rotsey in their alter ego surf band featuring Wayne Goodwin)?

I recently listened to Red Sails in the Sunset again and the song Bells and Horns in the Back of Beyond, which I now recognize as hugely influenced by the Atlantics.

Rob Hirst and Martin Rotsey with Dom Turner play in another band called "The Angry Tradesmen" sample here of a 'surf style' instrumental:

Hey Oestmann,
Welcome. We seem to be moving further from Brisbane with each email.
Delightful Rain has some great musicians and covering a variety of genres of music. A worthwile DVD to purchase. Spud tabbed a tune from Delightful Rain (by Les of the Jerseymen??? Going from memory which is pretty bad) and its in the tab section.
Have you seen GT Stringer down in Adeliade?
Cheers

Thanks for the welcome. Forgive my ignorance but I don't know GT Stringer? As we say in Australia "please explain?" I don't get out much nowadays ;)

Delightful Rain was a great project. I was privileged to go to the 'Rips and Riffs' concert in Nov 07 where a few of the artists played. I didn't know them all but really enjoyed the show.

I did see Spud's Tab (Denverman??) but haven't tried it as yet.

I don't have the Delightful Rain DVD but I watched the TV version, which was really nice.

I'd just like to point out that after being the only (sort of) surf-guitarist in my circle of muso friends; that I feel like all my Christmas's have arrived on this site! Guitar

Do go on...
