P.S. Any deliberate connection begween Magyara and Margaya, or is that just an accident?

Tuck,
this is not meant as a slag towards you,
but how do you think up some of these questions,?
and do you think you are a bit obsessive about it?

The song is based on the Hungarian minor scale; the native people of Hungary are known as Magyars. Just too close not to make a play on words.

Ah, so it was deliberate! I hoped it was.

I knew about Magyars. One of them once made me figure out how to say "the root of the tree." God, that was hard.

Ferenc, I really don't think so. I remember reading an interview with Randy Holden where he gave an explanation of the title (I think he said it was Svahili for a crocodile or something, I actually can't really remember at the moment), and it definitely had nothing to do with Magyars. Also, the song is actually not in the Hungarian minor scale - it's in the Byzantine scale, just like The Victor.

No Ivan, you misunderstood- I named my song, Magyara, which is based on Hungarian melodies en homage of the Randy Holden song. And now this whole thread has become rather byzantine.

Ah, I got you now! Idea Sorry for misunderstanding and muddying things up.... Embarassed

PS Magyara is a really cool song. I hope it'll be reborn in the future...

Sorry about the whole Margaya/_Magyara_ thing. That was really my fault. It was off topic, except as an inquiry into song names (relative to Magyara), but I'd run out of Torchulery (Torchulishness?). For the moment ... but now I'm back. Sorry Jeff.

OK, some information from:

The Sentinals. 2004. Big Surf/Surfer Girl. Colllector's Choice Music. CCM-471-2.

The liner notes for this reissue are credited to Bryan Thomas, with "Special thanks to Elliot Kendall for assistance." That comment is elucidated in the notes with a reference to a Nunes interview with "writer Elliot Kendall in 1995 for the liner notes to the initial Big Surf CD reissue."

The song writing credit for Tor-Chula is given as T. Nunes or bandleader and guitarist Tommy Nunes. However, the liner notes refer to the original Big Surf as including surf music, frat rock-R&B and pachuko soul. In the last category is noted "_Tor-Chula_ - inspired by Tequila, written by the Champs' Daniel Flores a.k.a. Chuck Rio." (That is, Flores/Rio of the Champs wrote their song Tequila.)

Credits are a slippery thing, as everyone knows. The Sentinals reissue CD also credits Revellion to T. Nunes, though the Revels Intoxica!!! The Best of the Revels, credits it to M. Hilder-N. Knowles. M. Hilder must be Mark Hilder - another name used by Tony Hilder (perhaps he was Mark Antony Hilder?). Since the back cover image of the original Big Surf LP included in the compilation doesn't list credits, unlike the back cover for Surfer Girl, it's possible that T. Nunes was simply given credit in the reissue for all the songs of unknown origin. That's consistant with the credit elsewhere to "the Sentinals" mentioned by Ivan.

I don't know where the Original Surfaris single Torchula b.w. Psyche-Out Felsted 8688) credits Torchula (spelled that way, apparently, without the dash). Or where the original Impact's LP Wipeout! credits Revellion. The reissue Impacts CD doesn't include the credits. They may have been on the central sticker of the LP, which isn't reproduced for the CD. In fact the CD - and the online database that labelled my copy in RealPlayer! - reverses the song lists for the two sides of original LP. Other folks on SG101 have noticed that, too!

It occurs to me to wonder if the name Torchula might owe something to Torquay or the Tornados as well as Tequila.

There's a Torcello ('biggish tower'?) near Venice (the Italian one); the Italian version of the island Korcula is Curzola; and there are two Islas Tortuga, one near Cuba (mentioned already by Jeff) and one off Venezuela.

could it be that its a made up word?
that rhymes with Tequila
and all this work is for a fake word?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Jeff(bigtikidude)

C'mon Jeff, I think your right about the etymology, but even if they made it up, it's not a fake word, it's a new word. Wink and it might still mean something, which is what we are trying to find out. Smile

I think its a made up word to sound like Tequila, and doesn't mean anything.

I can't tell you how many times I've used Talc Hour and Taco Hurl and I live 2 hours from San Luis Obispo.

"Hora Cult" - must be talking about Meshugga Beach Party!

Good one Doug!

I checked to see if Tequila was an anagram of San Luis Obispo, but it wasn't. I got:

ALE QUIT
EQUAL IT
QUA TILE
QUA LET I

However, the last possibility might be a covert reference to the Quality Inn in SLO. It''s across from the Taco Hurl on Santa Rosa.

Just for the record Magyara is the only actual anagram surf song title I am actually aware of. And if anyone wants another one for Margaya, there's still Maya Rag.

Tortuga has nearly as many anagrams as Torchula. Sentinal is huge. Anyone want to start a band named Slat Nine?
