Permalink New Speaker Day: Oxford 12

New Topic

New Speaker Day - is that a thing? It is for me at least. And really by new speaker, I mean a new to me actually rather old speaker: I just got an Oxford alnico 12JB-66 and I'm quite pleased with it. It's an alnico 12" 8 Ohm, and I got it for quite cheap on ebay.

I intended to put it in the Princeton 6G2 amp I built, as I've had an Oxford 12T6 in it, which sounds great, but I wanted to preserve it and it's also a higher power speaker (45 or 50W rating) that wasn't really necessary for a 12W amp. Plus some of the original 6G2 Princetons came with Oxford 10J4 speakers (10" ceramics), so I thought this might be pretty close. To test it out first, I tried it with the AA764 Champ (black/silverface circuit) I'd built and which is in a cabinet built for a 12" speaker.

Sonically, it's much like the 12T6, but it's got way less power handling, as it's rated for ca. 12W. So you get speaker breakup pretty early on, which made me decide it's not well-suited for the 6G2. But in the Champ it's great because I can get a lot of raw, dirty overdriven/distorted sound at pretty low volume. No, it's not suitable for clean surf tones, but it's great for playing Link Wray riffs, and I can even get pretty close to Dave Davies' "You Really Got Me" punctured speaker sound without actually having to puncture the speaker!

So, if you are looking for something to get some Link Wray sounds at low volume, I'd recommend this speaker. Otherwise, I have to say I'm a big fan of these 60's Oxford speakers (based on this exhaustive sample size of 2), and if you see any out there for a good price, they are worth trying out. And in contrast to the 12JB, the 12T6 Oxfords are really suitable for surf - not very efficient speakers, but have a great tone that goes well with Fender brown amps, and don't break up, as they've got a high power handling capability.
