Good afternoon all,

Up until recently I've always held surf music as a genre that I like, but am seldom in the mood for. I'm really interested in incorporating surf sounds into the music I play.

What's a good resource, be it video, book, or website that's good for teaching me the cliches and techniques of the surf genre? My style of playing sit's somewhere between rhythm and lead, kind of like what you would hear in a band that's just drums, guitar, and bass.

Also as a side question, what's a really fun surf song to learn that is also at the very least, somewhat technically challenging?

That’s all you need for a cool start

I'd recommend Catalina by Jon and the Nightriders. There's a backing track on SG101.

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.
Bringing instruments back to life since 2013.

Surf Rider is a nice place to start. Of course, virtually everyone learned Pipeline, sooner or later.

The first tunes I learned to play were Pipeline, Walk Don't Run and Apache. Those got me into the genre for other surf, spy and spaghetti western tunes.

I also leaned heavily into JBruce's surf demos with scrolling tabs. I found it very helpful.

Pipeline is the classic and fun to play.

If your taste go towards the heavier side try 2nd wave's "Save the Waves" by the Surfdusters. Basically a blues sliding riff that has a crazy middle.

While not technically Surf, Secret Agent Man is a song I’ve heard a lot of Surf players cover, including myself. It goes over well with audiences, can optionally contain lyrics, and isn’t hard to play. Junior Brown does a killer version in his Surf Medley.

Good list. Peter Gunn is also a great four-finger exercise.

Tom Conlon has some great tab/lesson on Youtube. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KhRGRxOpy0 Cool thing is he also sells great backing tracks for his lessons for just a couple bucks. https://payhip.com/TomConlon/collection/backing-tracks
Highly recommend both his lessons and his backing tracks.

Like others have already stated I think the Martin Schmidt "The Surf Guitar Book 1 & 2" are very cool and well worth the money.

I recommend starting with all the cool old classics: Pipeline, Surf Rider, Wipe Out, Out of Limits, Walk Don’t Run, Apache, Mr Moto, Baja, Rumble.

Agree on the Tom Conlon surf guitar lessons, Rockndawg. Great stuff!

Thanks Tom!

For the daring... and lusty!

I will "third" rockndawg and AlienSurf above. I myself have just recently discoverd Tom Conlon.

Speaking of Surf vocabulary or style cliches, I figured that it all started with the Ventures and the Fireballs and a handfull of other proto-surf instro groups. Specifically, I wanted to learn more rhythmic-based two and three string lines, which I beleive is a foundation of the sound.

I'm studying Perfidia which I think is ideal, because the single line melody shifts to two note then three note, to full chord resolutions, and then modulates to another key. Very much in the Walk Don't Run formula, but a little different which is nice.

It probably won't meet your need for a challenge, but I think it packs a lot of basic building blocks into a short tune.

Try these books:

Sorry I haven't posted back in a while, I kinda got sidetracked by making myself a surf-oriented guitar, seeing none of my current stable fit the bill. I threw a Bigsby on a Bullet Mustang and replaced the stock humbuckers with Lace Sensor Alumitone Deathbuckers (don't let the name fool you, when they are "split", it almost sounds like a Jazzmaster neck and a Tele bridge) and this thing really gets me amped and motivated to play.

TheSurfGuitarBook should be coming in today. I've been working on Pipeline and trying to nail down the strange picking pattern of Misirlou, but I'll definitely add Surf Rider and Walk Don't Run as soon as I get a handle on what's on my plate now.

The biggest distraction for me thus far is just how easy it is to improvise my own little parts to the songs. Surf as a genre come's pretty natural to me.

That sounds like some interesting pickup sounds.

Speaking only for myself, I like to improvise and/or come up with my own arrangements for Surf.

I love this video of a Mr. Moto jam. Paul Johnson starts, and players that follow have made it their own, depending on their guitar, playing style, and improvisation. The video is low quality but the audio is good.
