Eddie,
I'd love to audition for the place in the Showmen drum seat. Wow!
Alas, I am stuck out here on the other side of the Mississippi.
Speaking of the triplets, some of your songs also had the triplets played on the hi-hat as well. I always meant to ask, was this an early overdub, or done by having someone else play them along with the surf beat?
Thanks and good luck with the search!
Ted Pilgrim
That is exciting just to think about. You guys need to find a way to make it happen...

Hey Ted.....
Believe it or not we never did any overdubs. Also, did not have anyone else playing any of the parts with Dicky. He did all the parts as you hear them. Dick Dodd was a great drummer. If I remember right, he would do the triplets and hit the snare in between the triplets. I can ask him what he remembers and how he actually played the parts.
What songs are you referring to? I will listen for the parts you are talking about and get back to you. But truly, I do not recall any overdubs from any of the instruments. We basically recorded live in the studio.
Warm Regards,
Eddie

Ivan....Who is your dad?
BillAqua spoke of him in one of his posts on this thread.
Also, are you happy with how recording sessions went? I sent all the best vibes I could your way.
Hope your totally satisfied with the results.

I was going off my memory, without checking first, but the song I was thinking of was "Far Away Places". It's not a pure triplet on the hi-hat, per se, but it starts on the second verse, about 30 seconds in. If that is all Dicky at one time, thats incredible, because I hear the ride still going along with a two handed hi hat figure. What a sweet song. Also, what about the tambourine on Movin'?
Dicky was a fantastic drummer and what a resume form the Mouseketeers to the Showmen to the Standells. He's got more American pop culture in his little finger than... well I can't think of a good end to the metaphor. I was also meaning to ask about that one old 8X10 of you guys that lists "Skip" on drums. Was that Skip Hand? Dicky Dodd and Skip Hand RULE!
Thanks Eddie,
Ted

Ivan....Who is your dad?
Eddie, he's not some kind of a celebrity, if that's what you're thinking. He's just a very good rhythm guitarist and a huge fan of Bruce Welch, the rhythm guitarist of the Shadows. My dad and I had a Shadows tribute band from 2000 until 2004 (with Dane Carter, the Madeira drummer, and a few different bass players) and we played shows around Indiana, Michigan, Chicago and Toronto, so several people on this list had a chance to see us play and observe my dad's dead-on emulation of Bruce Welch's amazing rhythm guitar playing. (My dad played in Shadows-style bands semi-professionally in hotels on the Adriatic Coast of old Yugoslavia back in the early and mid-sixties, so he's been honing his art for a long time!) He is actually still pretty upset that I abandoned our tribute band for the Madeira! But I had to do original music, I couldn't just play in a cover band and be happy. And I really wanted to play surf music, not just Euro-type stuff. Though it was definitely really nice to play in a band with my dad. I often wish we could do it again, but time and distance practically prevent it.
Also, are you happy with how recording sessions went? I sent all the best vibes I could your way. Hope your totally satisfied with the results.
Eddie, we REALLY appreciate that! It appears to have worked, cause we're absolutely thrilled with the recordings! I'll be happy to send you a copy of the CD when it comes out, probably sometime in May.
Big thanks again!
Ivan
PS Dick Dodd ABSOLUTELY RULES!! You really need to persuade him to join you again!

Eddie, give Far Away Places another listen - it's definitely an overdub. You can hear snare fills at the same time as the two-handed hi-hat hits - a physical impossibility. Unless you had another person playing the hi-hat in the studio.

Hey Ted and Ivan,
Regarding Far Away Places and an overdub...It is very possible. I ran it through my recording studio monitors and pushed the treble. Half way through the first verse I am hearing a snare and hi hat drum fill playing identical parts. At least I think I did. My ears have taken a beating over the years playing as loud as I have. Tell me if you guys hear that snare/hi hat fill. The only way to really know if there was overdubbing is if there was someway to play the original master and isolate the drum track. I don't know if Dick would remember but I will ask him what he recalls. Again, I heard what I heard so I am sure it was an overdub. The engineers on that session (Lank and Bones) were very creative, and very likely could have suggested the overdub. They were the best I ever had. I can assure you there was no one else playing drum or percussion parts but Dick!
As far as the tambourine in Movinâ, that would have been Bob Knight one of the sax players.

Here is the update on Eddies video interview....
I was not happy with the quality of the video we shot at Clints show. Some of the sound was bad & you couldn't really hear Eddie very well (my fault). I was out of focus a few times. I didn't bring my A game that day.
Eddie & I have discussed this. Sometime this month we plan to to shoot some video under more controlled conditions that will produce something that everyone will enjoy. Stay tuned..

I had the extreme pleasure of meeting and jamming with Eddie Bertrand this last weekend!
HBKahuna picked myself, Maui, and his son Markus up form the airport, and when we got to HB's house, Eddie was already there - sitting at the table, playing HBKahuna's Jazzmaster, and warming up. Too cool!
The Jam was great -
Afterwards, HbKahuna offered his home to anyone that wanted to come over and hang out - so Eddie, John Benton, Frank Hughes, Maui, Markus, and I all went back.
Eddie stayed until 2:30 AM telling stories about his meeting with Leo Fender, and living and playing in a band in SO Cal in the early 60's.
I never thought I'd actually get to meet Eddie Bertrand, and to actually sit and talk with him was fantastic!
Oh, and the t-shirts are very cool looking!

Good to have you back, Eddie. Any update on the search for a backing band?

Are the Eddie and the Showmen CDs out of print? Will the original recordings become available again soon, perhaps on iTunes or something?
