Hey guys! I'm considering some new pickups for my Jazzmaster. I've got the Vintera II 50's JM and it's not that I dont like the pickups in it... they sound great but they also feel a little underpowered to me.
Now I've also been really into the Jazzmaster virtuoso guys like Oleg from Messer Chups and Lorenzo from Surfer Joe. From what I've been able to determine they both use (or have in the past) the Fender AVRI 62 JM pickups.
I've also read the 62's are a bit hotter than average, so that might be up my alley.
The only problem is they are not for sale on their own anymore.
Now I do see a lot of little companies that offer 62 repro models. Do you guys have any experience with any of those? Any suggestions? Could anyone maybe provide an objective comparison between 50's JM pickups and 62's?

Never tried them myself, but there's a company called Tone Hatch that lists 4 different flavors of JM pu's on their website including a '62 set. Tone Hatch are very well priced and get good reviews. I suspected based upon the very reasonable prices that they might be rebranded generic Asian imports but Tone Hatch pu's are actually handwound in Nebraska.

I might have stumbled across Tone Hatch on my search, it sounds familiar. A lot of small dealers seem to have some kind of 62 option...
But the thing is... do I want an actual faithful reproduction of a 62 JM pickup, or do I want whatever an AVRI 62 is (being that it's supposedly a bit hotter than normal).
I mean, one would assume they'd be the same thing but Fender has a weird irreverence for JM pickups, like how they'll actually be a P90 under the cover (J. Mascis JM) or more like a Strat single coil (MIJ JM's).

Look for used ones. They occasionally come up for sale. I tried various aftermarket pickups and always came back to the AVRI62 sets.

I've been watching. I saw a set a couple months ago before I'd decided on them on reverb for $200...
Why the heck did Fender quit making them?

There are so many decisions that Fender makes that are a mystery. It seems that they started sticking the thin-sounding, underpowered gray-bobbin AV65 (and similar Mexican versions) in any "vintage sounding" guitar, as if that's the tone that should represent a classic Jazzmaster sound. Who knows why?
Good luck on your quest! My friend just found a single one, then a set for very reasonable price. They are out there.

That's what's I've heard about the AVRI/Pure Vintage 65's! And that's a bummer because you can get a set of them anywhere.
