How do you have the tone and volume knobs set on your Jazzmaster? Do you run them both open all the way or do you dial ‘em back?
On my 2015 ‘60s Lacquer Jazzmaster (with stock AVRI ’65 pickups, I believe), I dial the tone back to around 6 and the volume to 8, as suggested to me by my pal and Hydronauts bandmate Ed (aka Lord Wellfleet on this forum).

10 & 10. I'll sometimes dial the tone back a little to 8 or 7, but that's about it.

I think that the brightness of a Jazzmaster depends on several factors: Heavier and/or flatwound strings (which most people in the surf community tend to use) are less bright to begin with than regular size round wounds. And then, Jazzmasters come equipped with pots of different values: The old school 1meg ohm pots let through more treble than those with 500k or 250k, even when they are wide open.
That being said: On my Squier VM JM, which still is strung with rounds and has the original 1meg pots, I roll the tone back to about 4.

Wait, you guys use the knobs? I'm a 10 always guy usually...
I also don't have a JM, but that's what I do on a Jag and Strat. Sometimes I dial the tone back on the bridge pickup on the strat. Jag is both pickups on always.
I also have my bass at like 8 on the amp and treble on like 4 or 5.

I'm With Chiba. Mostly full out unless I dial back the volume a little bit. And yeah, I compensate with my amp EQ, I just turn the the treble until my ears stop bleeding.

Volume usually on 10 and tone often but not always backed down to between 7 and 6 on both the Jazzmaster and Jaguar. But it all depends on amp, mood and what my ears like to hear on that particular day

Define "roll off." When I'm using my Jazzmaster, I set the amp's controls to get the tone I want. My Jazzys aren't particularly bright IMO. I start with all my amp's tone controls at max and tweak from there. (After all, they're passive controls - starting them turned down halfway from the get-go defeats the whole purpose of having them.) I have no problems switching from a Jazzy to a Strat and don't feel the need to further tweak my amp's controls when doing so.

My jazzmaster is really super bright so tone is almost always on 7
Sometimes I roll off volume a bit, especially when playing with overdrive

Jazzmaster is full out, although I have a volume pedal in the FX loop of my Nocturne Mystery Brain. Not sure if it has the original 1-meg pots or if they’ve been changed. 11-48 nps strings.
The rhythm circuit of the Jazzmster has the volume rolled off completely, so it acts like a mute switch when I change over to steel.
Amp is usually set vol 4, tr 4, bs 4, reverb 4 (unless I’m using a 6G15 tank and surfy drip), and trem set to taste.
