Permalink Dick Dale jumpsuit

This pic gets posted with some frequency here, it pops up almost every time there's a thread about Dick Dale. Of course there are a few who haven't seen it, and they always are taken aback.
But I wonder what is really shocking about it, or why it surprises anyone. If you know Dick's history, you know he has been through plenty of rough patches, but always rode it out and rose to the top. He did what he had to to keep his career going
Unless I'm mistaken, this pic dates from the swingin' early 70s and DD is playing a club called the Playgirl Club, the fine print says it 1&1/2 miles south of the happiest place on earth, Disneyland in Orange County. Playgirl was (is?) a magazine that featured nude pics of men (like Burt Reynolds), a direct response to all the men's magazines that feature nude women, and I might guess, the men's magazines that featured nude men.
I don't know what went on at the club, maybe some Chippendale's type male revue? But did Dick Dale perform in the nude? Has anyone ever dared to ask him that question?
Anyway, a gig is a gig, and if they paid DD a boatload of money to entertain some drunk secretaries on a girl's night out, I'm sure he happily took it. And pose for a poster for some more $, sure why not. Admit it, he looks like he's in pretty good shape here, late 20s, fit. Nothing to be ashamed of. The girl in the top pic is his babe of a wife, so if you find some homoerotic content, it's coming from your brain, not his.
And, you'll just have to accept that men in the 70s wore jumpsuits, ya know, macho guys like Evel Knieval, Elvis Presley. They certainly weren't the worst fashion of a decade that featured plaid pants and leisure suits.
So, even more fuckin' respect from me for Dick Dale, pleasing the patrons of the Playgirl Club in Orange County CA. You all wish you were so badass and had enough confidence to pose like that. Big Grin

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

The first time I saw that pic, I emailed Dick Dale about it, and he replied! I wish I had saved the email, but it was something like "it was the 70's, and it seemed like a good way to get some attention and publicity for the club." He mentioned that it was the playgirl club, and he was more or less turning the naked girl/playboy thing on it's head. He did mention that it was only for the picture, and he laughed it off in the end.

More important than what he wore is, what was the show like? I've heard the 80's live D.D., but never the "Lounge" 70s D.D. Judging by the male crowd dominated live picture, I'll bet it was still heavy and fast, with lots of guitar heroics.

It's funny that Ferenc mentions D.D. Elvis, and Evel Knievel all in one sentence - all 3 major influences for me, and all 3 very strong role models for millions growing up.

I think I'm going to get a jumpsuit.

In my findings it seems that jumpsuits (with belt and brass buckle) are now a part of Winnebago ownership!!

The thing about jumpsuits is . . . . . don't bend over to far in one of them because you will rip the ass out of it! Shock (Didn't you notice Elvis always moved sideways on one of them)

You don't need a jumpsuit, a Tshirt will do.
