Permalink Blossom Point into Fender NORMAL channel!

While experimenting I discovered (for myself, anyway) a game-changing setup that renders my two-channel Fender reverb combo amps more surf-friendly when using an outboard reverb. Instead of the VIBRATO channel I plug into the (much-ignored) NORMAL channel through the Blossom Point with the pedal's output turned up a bit to better match the gain of the V channel. The omission of the V channel's reverb return stages (V4) in the N channel makes for a clearer signal path; for even more input headroom set to pedal for unity gain and just turn up the N channel volume to compensate. With the addition of a trem pedal, my BFDR is a now (almost) a mini- blond Showman!

The Vibrato channel has a small capacitor which allows highs to actually bypass the voulume control, often called the Bright Cap. On larger models, such as the Vibrolux or the Twin, this is controlled by the Bright Switch, but on Deluxe Reverbs, it’s always on for the Vibrato Channel, and there isn’t one on the Normal channel, so that could explain another reason this works.

For the most part, I use Winfield amps, and my Elizabeth has a Bright Switch, so I can obtain the same effect, and have used the Blossom Point in front of it quite effectively.

I also have a Fender ‘68 Custom Deluxe Reverb, which has a “Custom” channel, which uses a tone stack which is similar to a Blonde Bassman or a Super Reverb. I’ve never tried it with the Blossom Point, but just as a stand-alone amp, it does quite well for Surf.
