Carol Kaye has a series of instructional books and DVD's that have some great surf-related material. Ms.Kaye was a session player on a lot of the albums from that era so her playing style and bass sound, for me, are synonymous with surf bass. Bass guitar was mixed very low in a lot of the early records so it's hard to hear the bass line, but Ms.Kaye's lines are usually mixed front-and-centre and are very distinctive. Almost anything by the Marketts, Sandy Nelson, the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, and a thousand pop songs, movies, and tv shows from the 1960's to 1980's feature her bass playing. For me, Carol Kaye is the definitive surf bass sound. Listen to "Moondog" on the Beach Boys "Surfing Safari". It doesn't get better than that!!! —Bass Wabbit Last edited: Aug 09, 2023 12:50:32 |

There might be a video of Jonpaul Balak speaking on this topic from one of the recent surf festivals. Can anyone out there confirm this or correct me? —Patrick |

A follow-up regarding the Carol Kaye instructional books... And here's a great video teaching you how to play one of her most iconic bass lines... Bass Wabbit |
