I have a Japanese Jazzmaster and it's terrific, great tone, excellent playability and as tough as a concrete block.

If you are looking for more of a Link Wray sound see if you can't wrangle one of the new Danelectros. I got a 59 Pro about a month ago and it sounds great. I'm not a huge fan of the short scale - it's really short, but it sounds great. They also make the new double cutaway model. In the U.S. the new Danelectros go for about $249. I'm not sure that a Jazzmaster or a Jaguar will give you much of a Link Wray sound. His classic recordings were done with cheapo guitars. Danelectros, Supros and in the 60s he had a couple of wacky Ibanez guitars. In the 80s, with Robert Gordon, Link is often pictured with a Gibson SG. On his last couple of tours he used a Strat and a Marshall half stack.

You should maybe think about getting gear where we get all of our gear.

The Danelectros are quite inexpensive in Europe too at 215 euros. I'm thinking of getting a keen green Pro myself.

That is the exact guitar that I got. It's fun and relatively inexpensive. I had a reissue Danelectro Longhorn guitarlin that I ebayed in order to get the new 59 Pro. The quality on the new ones far surpass the reissues from a decade ago.

The model name is "Dano Pro" and the new Danelectros are supposed to be much better than the ones from a few years back.

not yet available in Europe though. and no way they'll hold up as a surf guitar. I want one though Smile

longboards - use ebay.de (the german version) -there's a lot up there. or use ebay international (.com). I got my Jap jag from Japan, ven with shipping and taxes I payed less then what a Jap jag costs here.

a great source for new stuff is Thomann.de, they have local sites in your language, just see what they carry. and thee are sellers who sell new stuff on ebay.de, like jags and JM's.

JP, LONGBOARDS - if you want THE Link Wray sound.. get a Yamaha SG-5 guitar. They USED to be cheap - but I guess more than one person wants to sound like the late, great Link. The Yamaha SG-5 is sort of Jazzmaster looking. Link renamed his 'Screamin' Red'. It was for sale at one time on his website when he was still breathing - FOR BIG BUCKS. I don't think there were any takers.

Be that as it may - my advice if you want to sound like Link:
1. Get a CHEAP guitar - but do what's necessary to get it to play well (setup, fret work..etc) - Make sure it has a trem bar and get that to work EASILY and SMOOTHLY --- DON'T CHANGE THE PICKUPS
2. Get a crappy sounding solidstate amp or a tube amp with clean/dirty channel switching.
3. If your guitar technique is very precise and well executed - SLOPPY it up.

I have a couple of cheap Silvertones that were made - Somewhere(??!!) After some work, they play great. They are dirt cheap when they come up on EBAY and lend themselves to proper setup and playability. Even Link thought cheap axes and pickups gave unique sounds.. a departure from the usual Fender and Gibson fare. Another great candidate is the older Peavey stuff.. the T-60s, the T-25s. no trem arm but a way different sound from those ferrite pickups and unique pickup circuitry.

If you think you can handle a price of around $800.00, get an Eastwood MAP or other AIRLINE type guitar.

happy hunting

Wink
