What the hell is going on with those pickups? Those frames aren't original. Did somebody route this for humbuckers or something?

That is a first year (1962), one year only version - those are the stock pickups, and it has a 3 switch pickup selector plate.

Wise words. If you go back to the ‘70s, it wasn’t so easy to find a guitar that played well and sounded good, but these days, they abound. There are tremendous high end guitars available, and even low end guitars can be excellent instruments. I have two Squiers, both of which sound great. Why would I plunder funds set aside for retirement just to feel good about having purchased and admittedly desirable guitar, when I can find something just as good for a fraction of the price?

The subject of this thread is the Bass VI, an instrument I’ve been fascinated with for decades. I bought a Custom Shop VI, over a decade ago, but never really felt good about it. A few years later, I found a Japanese made VI that I loved.

These days, Squier Bass VIs are easy to come by, and play quite well. If I wanted another VI, I’d probably just buy a Squier, perhaps upgrading the tailpiece and machine heads. (Actually, I’ve done that to my MIJ VI, too.) A well setup Squier VI would do everything I could ask for. Would it have bragging rights? Not particularly, but who cares. I own several guitars which are unique, but bragging rights have little, if any, worth. No one cares if one of my guitars is part of a very limited run. Not one soul.

My current strategy is to buy instruments that serve my musical needs. I have some nice instruments, but I would advise buying for function, and not bragging rights.

Somebody suggested getting a Squier Bass VI and modding it - that's exactly what I did and am quite pleased with the results.

I had my tech do a bunch of fretwork and put a new (actual made from bone) nut on it, that made a HUGE difference. I sanded down the neck and put Fralin Jaguar pickups in it - Fralin now sells these in a set partly thanks to my conversation with Lindy over what I was trying to accomplish.
