Really enjoying Jimmy Dale's set. His original was really good.

I agree, Jimmy is absolutely on fire tonight!

MooreLoud.com - A tribute to Dick Dale. New EP Louder Than Life available on bandcamp and website. Taking guitar lessons from Jimmy Dale.

Yes, agreed. This was the first time I got reminded of a great show I saw in the mid-90's, the time I saw his dad live in Amsterdam. Hats off!

For the rest, the program got better as the evening progressed, only the heavy distorted sound for most of the evening on the mainstage was a bit of a bummer to be honest, but it seems they worked it out and replaced the faulty showman head with another one and there was no distortion that wasn't meant intentionally during Jimmy Dale's set.

I honestly found the offerings yesterday and today up to Humanga Danga rather mediocre. I mean: the Undercurrents, two kids sitting in a chair and doing the teenage thing with no rhythm section, just picking Madeira songs? Come on!

In all I liked pretty much everything on the mainstage except that the Kileauas could use a little variation in their offerings. Their tunes sound pretty much alike after a while.

The Greasy Gil’s on the Garden Stage were phenomenal.

I just finished watching "The Sound of Dick Dale" in yt, what a great talk! I highly recommend to everyone. So much food for thought out of this, and it turned out to be quite inspirational. I grabbed my guitar immediately after watching this Cool

The whole event seems awesome overall, so many good performances. I hope I will be able to join in person next year!

I enjoyed the Dick Dale talk too. The big takeaway for me is that DD didn't worry about how others did things, he just figured out his own way and in the process created his own unique style. I'm sure at the time most other guitarists would say he's playing 'wrong' (and Jimmy even said this). Time has proven them quite wrong.

I think this is a good lesson about not obsessing on how to sound like 'X'. Learn the basics of music as it pertains to the guitar, and then find your own way. In his time, gear options were limited so he had to work on his technique. I say this is still the best way to develop your own unique style, limit gear choices to a small part of your journey to playing music.

On a separate point, I wish the youtube feed could switch on the chat, so the rest of us can communicate as we watch

Watched the talk with Jimmy Dale and these other guys and indeed, very interesting, especially the point what Danny points out, how Dick Dale was supposed to play guitar the "wrong" way.
Looking forward to the Bradipos IV as so far the bands haven't been that spectacular. Hope they play their older work as I really think their new album is not bad, but certainly a lot less than their older work.

Agreed! They were what I expected them to be. And they are in my personal top 5 of great shows I've seen so far.
Waiting now for the very much hyped Les Agamemnonz and see if the hype is justified. But first there is that other band that's been hyped up to high heaven. Let's see. Great, another Middle-Eastern sounding band.

Unfortunately the live feed of the Scimitars is being badly handled. The timing between the feed and the music is off by about 30 seconds, and they have just moved the cameras back to the main stage so we can watch Les Agamemnonz set up. I hope they get it figured out soon!

True, but at least you got to SEE the belly dancer which is as far as I'm concerned the most interesting bit anyway Smile But you're right today's sound handling is not optimal - at least with the Frenchies (who in fact just play European instro from the early 60's, with which I grew up and which I still love to bits) the sound is consistent.

I love it! Satan's Pilgrims just played their rendition of "Wave" by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Surf meets Bossa Nova!

Feed was only down for a minute or two. It came back and we got to hear WIPE OUT!!!

Patrick

What a treat are the Surfaris! Just goes to show the First and Second wave are and always will be the best! By far the best show I've seen so far and I think that nothing that comes tomorrow can tap on that one. So for now: 1. Surfaris; 2. Jimmy Dale/ex aequo with Satans Pilgrims; 4. Bradipos IV; 5. Les Agamemnonz.

And yes, the feed abruptly stopped, but was replaced.

What's up with The Lords of Atlantis live stream. It jumps around from place to place in the song and then just ends. I think there's a ghost in the machine! The music however is great!

Patrick

The sound is all over the place today, almost unbearable. It cuts off when the show is not over yet and then suddenly starts and now with the Lords of Atlantis it's one time almost inaudible, so you set your volume higher to be able to listen and then suddenly it's full strength and you nearly fall off your chair for it being so loud and just as you turned the volume down again, it jumps back to barely audible. Takes the fun out of watching, tbh.
And then the feed suddenly cuts off. And what's with the announcement that Wave Electric will be there next?
Edit: oh well, I suppose there's no more SJF2023 anymore. Feed's not coming back up but then again my top 5 of best bands has already been set anyway.

I was lucky to make it to Livorno to catch Saturday night’s shows and wow I was blown away. Congratulations to Lorenzo, the bands and everyone else involved. It was truly an evening to remember!
