That is the Scripps Pier as I remember it. That's an Ansel Adams photo from the 60s, I worked there in 1975, in the CO2 lab. I believe the peer has been re-built since then. I calibrated CO2 standards, took readings off the pier, maintained some of the equipment, and so on.

Surfed for the first time in that general area. Surf wasn't fierce at all, good thing for me. They used to do TGIF keggers on Friday evenings on the pier sometimes. Heavy disco/funk era, lotsa Average White Band, KC & the Sunshine Band, and so on. Occasionally surf music, there were some surfer leftovers, but not exactly a great time for surf music. Those guys would surf in January, right over lunch. The water was cold, they wore rubber suits. I thought they were nuts until I went in for the first time, but they were sure right.

Wow that gives me a great story for when I'm talking to people about it.
