I have occasional bouts of tinnitus that came on during lockdown, when I was not exposed to any loud noises at all. But it did come one when I was having an issue with my neck

I agree with Jeff that it is in the head, not the ears. Interesting about the salt and sugar - Ms da-ron is a qualified nutritional therapist. I'll consult with her, and see what she says (She did get rid of my asthma, so I have a fair bit of faith in her!).

Very cool da-ron. I look forward to Ms da-ron's assessment. Nutritional therapists have a lot of knowledge in a lot of areas, and it looks like a lot of us can use the help!

A further note about NAC dosage. The ordinary dose range for NAC as a supplement is 2 to 4 capsules per day of 600 mg per capsule. In medical research studies NAC has been used in much higher doses. HAC has been used as a treatment for tylenol (acetaminophen) overdose for more than 30 years, it prevents liver damage from high blood levels of tylenol. The doses used to prevent tylenol toxicity are enormous. Still, it is possible to take too much NAC, of course.

Before you consider experimenting with doses of NAC exceeding 2400 mg/day you should consider taking steps to assure that the NAC you are using is free of contaminants. One way is to ask for evidence of assays for purity conducted by an independent lab that has established trustworthiness. Beyond this I can not comment on experimenting with high doses of NAC.

In my situation I know how many NAC capsules I took that day by listening to the loudness of tinnitus in my left ear. I've been taking NAC daily for a dozen years.

How many mgs per day Conrad? Maybe I didn't take enough. I also read that it only helps something like 10% or 15% of sufferers.

The usual range of NAC dosage--but not specifically for tinnitus, just for nonspecific health improvement--is 1200 mg (2 capsules) per day to 2400 mg (4 capsules). In treating life-threatening tylenol overdose, NAC doses many times higher than these--but for only a few days--are used by doctors in hospitals. I could not find any studies comparing different doses of NAC in treating tinnitus, and I could not find any reports of people taking more than 2000 mg/day of NAC for tinnitus.

I did find a rat study that found that both NAC and curcumin (given separately) decrease tinnitus. Curcumin is commonly taken to decrease joint pain, and it also increases working memory in seniors. Here is the rat study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36032833/
I have no experience with curcumin regarding tinnitus. One more thing notable in this rat study is that "acoustic trauma" was definted as 110 db for 2 hours. Indoor rock concert sound pressure levels range from 90 to 120 db, and 110 db is obviously not unusual for surf.

This report of NAC prevention of noise-induced hearing loss is founded on a large amount of data. It focuses on hearing loss rather than tinnitus, but they are related.
