anyone know how the pebbles comps came together? All I know is they exist.
I have a cdr of "surfbeat from behind the Iron Curtain" from the pebbles series, and it has a trrack by The Javalins, "Javalins Rock". Now I know there's a dutch indo-rock band the Javalins and the track sounds very much like an indorock track, I have one other track by them and Id swear it's the same band. it's just, to the best of my knowledge, the Netherlands have never been incorporated in the USSR empire. We've had a little incident where we were part of Germany for a couple of years, but Russia? Now I know the Russians used to be quite decent at revising history, but a scam like this seems unlikly. anyway, anyone ever heard about a russian or Eastern European band the HJavalins, or know Javalin Rock from another source but Pebbles?

I think the compilers messed up. Some 45s might have been licensed to eastern-block countries. I donâ t have the comps, but I remember that Pipeline Magazine mentioned several tracks that were NOT recorded behind the iron curtain. Itâs a shame, because it distorts the picture and there probably is more that fitted the bill better.

I hadn't thought of that, that makes perfect sense. I knew 45's were issued all over the map on kinds of labels and sometimes even with different band names and song titles I believe. In defence of the sompilers, I think the comp was made before the days of the internet, which makes research so much easier.

Ummm, Wannes, did you look at the CD liner notes? It says right there: The Javalins (Netherlands): Another Surinam band, who cut a couple of damn rare records, albums and a pile of singles in the mid-60s. This track appeared on a German Beat compilation from 1965. A bootleg repressing of their fantastic album For Twen is well worth seeing out.

Edit: Oops, I just saw you said you have a CD-R, so I guess you don't have liner notes with it. Well, there you go - that's what it says about them! There are a whole bunch of Western European bands included on the comp. The above explanation sounds good to me.

Oh well, they still screwed up about the iron curtain thing. but then again, "Amsterdam is a country" "the Netherlands is the capitol of Danmark", Ive heard it all.
but worse, they quote the Javalins as from Surinam wow - allright, a former colony of the netherlands just like indonesia (and Manhatten for that matter), but calling indonesians Surinam? I bet there are neighbourhoods in the netherlands where you could get knifed for saying that. that's seriously a historical cock-up, both political and musical.

Never take any Pebbles liner notes too seriously, at least that goes for the early volumes from the 80s. BTW, volume 15 is all Netherland bands and really good.
