This new recording of Insanitizers' "Space Force" starts with the lead guitar in a "high surf" timbre. After the intro it changes into a Rautalanka timbre (similar to Finnish instrumentals and to The Shadows), and after the bridge it changes into a reverbed rock timbre. I instantly select among these timbres on my Zoom pedal, which i used in these recordings. Everything outside pedal settings is identical.

Possible comments include: The timbre changes are easy to hear (or subtle, or undetectable), I prefer the ____ timbre, equipment questions, where did this song come from.

A good tape echo, combined with a (cheap) European made amp like the ones Egmond made for example, can reproduce European instrumental music (which de facto "Rautalanka" is, nothing more, nothing less) fairly decently. Use anything but chrome strings, remove as much bass out of the guitar sound as you can, increase the middle a little and there you go. The trick is to make the clean sound of the guitar as thinly as possible without it sounding shrill. The echo will add some "fatness" back into the sound. You can achieve this on Fender amps as well, but it will require more fiddling on the treble, mids and basstones. The best results you will get with European amps - Vox should do. Do NOT use reverb as this wasn't used that much in European instrumental music. Echo will give you also a sort of reverb, if configured correctly.
These are my experiences. I haven't used them so far on any of the 3 albums I made, except for my version of the Rocket Man traditional in the version of the Spotnicks. My next album will be containing more European instrumental style tunes though.
