Permalink Cheap Alnico 5 pickups for Squier

New Topic

Hi,

I'm looking at building an affordable surf guitar strat. I have my eye on a Squier strat that is loaded with a ceramic pickup HSS configuration. I'm just going to swap all of the electronics with a new harness to give it an alnico SSS configuration.

I'm looking at different options for cheap Alnico 5 pickups with Formvar wiring to get the same approximate sound as the $169 Fender '57/'62 pickups.

Basically I just chose 1962 because that's the model year of Dick Dale's "Beast."

Has anyone ever heard of GFS Pickups? Seems like they have a lot of choices of very nice Alnico 5 pickups with Vintage-correct building techniques.

These look nice. I think with the low resistance they would sound very bright. The enamel magnet wiring I don't think is correct for 1962, though. The quoted resistance of about 5.5k seems closest to the Fender '57/'62 though.

These 1959 models have Formvar magnet wiring but the resistance seems a little high on these, about 6.5K-8K. Maybe they are too overwound, IDK:

The 1963 seems a little less overwound, but still a bit overwound between 6.1-7K:

Finally, these 1964 pickups seem nicely balanced between Vintage and overwound with 5.8k-6.5k resistance. GFS describes these pickups as "Surfy," which is what I am looking for!

Even though the year doesn't match Dick Dale's "Beast," I'm tempted to go for these. Remember 1964 was the year of the Blondeface. The resistances seem pretty close to what other manufacturers are quoting for slightly hot early '60s pickups.

Take a look at the specs for the Klein 1962 Strat reproductions and the GFS 1964 pickups are pretty close:

Any other brands I'm overlooking? I've also seen some handwound Alnico 5 pickups sold direct from China on AliExpress as well, selling for about $45/set and have seen these reviewed on YouTube and these seem fine, also.

GFS really tends to favor hot pickups rather than go for vintage correct specs - they seem to cater to people who like their pickups to be easily overdriven.

If you are going for the most affordable option, I would not obsess about particular years emulated or wire coatings, etc. In my opinion, as long as you are getting alnico pickups with output in the general range of those early 60s pickups, you'll be fine - variability in amp, reverb, and strings are going to outweigh those minor differences.

GFS are decent. Some of these budget pickups show their flaws when played s bit louder or with effects. You can consider these (Ventura link below) or look used for pure vintage line. (Without knowing your budget)

GFS pickups don't live up to the extreme hype (merely my opinion) given by the company that makes them but they can be an improvement over the squier pickups and in many cases and can make a low end guitar sound better. GFS has many video reviews of their guitars and pickups on youtube. https://youtu.be/FU7CpSeLdwQ https://youtu.be/0WZxaTx8SFY https://youtu.be/nB7JP2itXeI

I can give some input on one brand, Planet Tone. I bought a 63/65 strat bridge pickup from them ($35 at the time), and it sounds just like I think it should for an early 60s strat. They no longer have that exact pickup model, but do have a 1962 model:

https://planettone.com/collections/pickups-for-strat%C2%AE/products/1962-scooped-mids-pickup-for-strat%C2%AE

Personally, I would avoid direct from China sales - it's hard to know what you will end up with unless you've actually heard and played a guitar with those exact pickups.

These are great pickups and very affordable:

I bought a GFS strat on clearance for 100 bucks a few years ago. I couldn't get along with their stock pickups and installed their 64 greybottoms and kwikplug harness. It sounds pretty good for a guitar with only about 200 bucks in it.
Just don't expect Fender American sound quality.
