Surf, classical, punk, jazz, grunge, blues... but no country thanks ;)

This week, I have been listening to Gaye Bykers On Acid, The Saints and Mudhoney in particular.

The wider your interests, the better the musician you will be... definitely not a loser!

I like a lot of different kinds of music but for some reason I really only listen to surf right now.

I still listen to a lot of Post-Punk bands like Bauhaus and Specimen. Especially love Alien Sex fiend. I like a lot of older industrial and Cold Wave.

I still have a soft spot for sleazy Hollywood Glam, of course a lot of punk, Funk is cool as is Acid Jazz.

So I am all over the board and everything acts as a influence. Even though I may not particuliarly like a certain type of music. I will probably still take something from it for my own playing whenever I can.

Limiting yourself by listening to only one genre is mind numbingly boring. I have to hear lots of different stuff every day or I go cookoo. For me, at least, the whole random, shuffle, schizo way of music listening has always been my preference as opposed to all country or all reggae, blues, etc. I do get obsessed with surf, but not for more than a week or two before I break it up with something else. My latest kick is Italian tunes like in the wedding scene of "The Godfather". I have a bunch of 60's and 70's Italian movie soundtrack music that is too cool. Tony Mottola albums are kitchy, but have great guitar playing and arranging. Mrs. Miller is tha bomb(I don't think she was kidding!).

Augustus Pablo, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, and of course surf, spaghetti western, spy, twang, psych, garage rock, fuzz, reverb, tremelo, music.

Thanks guys. My friend that called me a loser was a straight up metal head. He laughs at my "emo" music. Does anyone enjoy bands like AFI, My Chemical Romance?? He says F*** the Mainstream music. He has logical theorys on why people listen to this music and change there life style and looks to "fit in". I say BS, cause this music is more on a persona; level which we all can agree on. Im mean, come on, does anyone say "All hail Satan"? No, its just for fun. I mean, im a good catholic and I really like this one song called God Is a Lie. Anyways(I got a little far there). Thanks.

Joelman... thanks for reminding me: I can't stand rap and I HATE this GANGSTA RAP CRAP! I also can't stand "metal" but strangely enough, I really like PWEI who, for all intents pulled off a marriage of both genres.

Redd_Tyde... ASF The old community FM station I listen to now and then (I usually stick to Classic FM now days) played EST - Trip To The Moon this morning... love it!

I don't really care for mainstream music either. Most of it just trys to sound like what is popular right now, which makes for boring music if you don't care for it.

well, I think you're on the right track if you don't like or hate mainstream music because it is mainstream music. just because art is commercial art, doesn't meant it's bad art. There's a lot of commercial crap out there, but also some kick ass stuff. My wife has just bought a DVD from Madonna and I cant helping digging the hell out of it, and thinking she may be a not-so-good singer, but she's an awesome conceptual artist, producer (she knows who to hire) and manager. makes great art imo. at the same time, what's commercial? The Ramones were in it for the money, the sex pistols were in it for Malcom McLaren's. and let's not forget half of the 1st wave surf records were set up by producers who in this day and age would be putting out lame ass R&B shite.

rant about commercial music

You'd be suprised how many bands got started to make a few bucks. Bands like the Who started out playing R&B covers and Mod dance music (which is awesome in its own right) because that's what the kids liked and that's what got them paid.

Anywho.....I only listen to Yngwie Malmsteen. I don't even know why I'm a member of this forum.
