I really enjoyed Riding Giants, the surfing documentary. But, I was watching the director and editor's commentary, and they said they did not want to add surf music (aside from Dick Dale's Miserlou) to the soundtrack because surf music was too slow. I wanted to scream. Then they continued to brag about how vast their library of music was. Apparently not vast enough... Crying

Man, I loved that documentary! But yeah, I was seriously disappointed at
the lack of surf music in it.

SURF MUSIC IS TOO SLOW?!?!? Yeah, there ARE slow surf tunes, but
why not try "Bombora!" by The Original Surfaris??? THAT tune is enough
to get the adrenaline flowing any time! Cool

Vincent

Is this something you can share with the rest of us, Amazing Larry?!?

Bombora was written and performed originaly by 'The Atlantics'

It's a different song, Spud, same name.

I have to disagree ... I think Stacy Peralta and his editor did a great job with that film, especially the music. It did have Misirlou and it had Link Wray's proto-surf instro classic "Rumble." So, surf music was represented. IT also had the non-surf Hawaiian songs "Twelth Street Rag," "Aloha Ka Manini" and especially "Makaha Waves," by Screamin' Jay Hawkins - brilliant! Remember, this film profiled the 1950s surf scene in Hawaii, only briefly touching on the surf-culture explosion of the 1960s, of which surf music was a part. Then, it jumped to Northern California in the 1970s and big-wave tow-in surfing of the 1990s. In context, they did a good job of balancing the music with the eras, IMHO. That they were wrong about the tempo of surf music was probably a dodge used so they didn't have to admit that surf music, when overused in a film like "Riding Giants," is a giant cliche. That they didn't go the easy route and glom a bunch of surf music onto the soundtrack ... as many might have ... speaks well to their taste. While I love surf music, I still think they did a brilliant job with the soundtrack.

Every time I see an old Dale Davis film I think that today’s longboard videos at least would benefit from some good surf music.
But generally I think most important is that the music matches the style and era of the footage.
