Permalink Hawaiian/Polynesian surf project name

Hi everyone!

While being away from my bandmates for uncertain period of time I’ve decided to go into some material and ideas that I was compiling for years, but had no time and desire to go into a lot. But now I’ve got some)
These are mostly some Hawaii and Polynesia inspired tunes with ukulele as a rhythm and some surf guitar as a lead plus more relaxed drums and bass than we used to do in Waikiki Makaki, that was pretty on the heavy side of the surf/rock/punk/garage or even metal.
As a linguist I strongly believe in the names importance, so I surely need it before recording or publishing anything. Please help)

I think of something from Hawaiian, Maori or other languages that speak of surf, ocean, wind, sun, dolphins, sharks, turtles or whatever! Maybe something cheesy or English/Hawaiian languages crossover. Surely it should be easy to remember)

I think that this will be mostly a one man band and should also speak of this, so surely no “The Hawaiians” kind of names)

I would appreciate any ideas, especially the crazy ones!

Malihini. It means visitor or stranger.

No suggestions, but the idea of a Maori word sounds fascinating to me. I don’t know much about them, but if you can find a Maori word that works, it would be very cool.

Happy Sunsets!

Haole is very insulting, just fyi. It is usually paired with “fucking” or “stupid” as in “Fuckin haole shit” or “Stupid haole.” Things I was called throughout my childhood.

There is a (pretty awful) “hard rock” band called Honky, which would be so similar as to make Haole seem derivative to me.

How about Bad Keikis? Keiki means child.

This is the name of the most successful mall in America. It has like 350 stores (several are mammoth department stores) and every one is the franchise’s top selling store. It was huge in the 80s and now it is inconceivably humongous. This name is akin to worshipping consumerism.

Cultural appropriation can be fun, but treading lightly is always smart.

Ala Moana is also a beach and a neighborhood where the mall is located. Ala Moana harbor, Ala Moana yacht club, etc. The reference is wider than just the mall, so I do not agree that the name promotes the worship of consumerism.

That is the most developed area in the state - so yes it is still a name that denotes worship towards industry and capitalism. I lived in Manoa and Kailua for ages 2 - 21 (1974 - 1993) I never once heard anyone refer to anything as Ala Moana, other than the mall. That includes early adult years, news casts, and every single teacher and classmate. The bus that goes there says Ala Moana Shopping Center, not just Ala Moana. People just called that area Makiki or Kaka’ako. There is also no such thing as a big or little Kahuna, but people use those as well.
