Wow, does the Surf Coasters' version ever outdo PJ & The Galaxies version. Any other opinions on this?

Hey Jake, you probably realize this, but though they have the same title, they're totally different songs. The Surf Coasters' Tally Ho is written by Shigeo Naka, while the other is of course written by Paul Johnson. They're both really good songs, especially the Surf Coasters' one - one of my favorites by them, for sure, and there's a lot of competition for that! Ivan —Ivan |

Is the Surf Coasters version not based around the Paul Johnson version? The beginning riffs sound similar. I just always assumed Shigeo was borrowing. |

I don't think so in that case, but there's definitely some noticeable cases of borrowing in their catalog: "Mad Soldier" - "Mar Gaya" I forget which one, but one of the songs on L'Espirit has a bass part very similar to the Doors' "Break on Through." For most of these, though, they're not straight-up ripoffs. The Slacktone lift in "Tusk," for one, is really brief. -Warren —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |
