Hey, everybody. With our new album coming out, it got me thinking, do most of us reverb junkies prefer traditional surf rock? Or are we embracing its evolution and the future of the genre?
You know...
Ventures vs. Man or Astroman?
Dick Dale vs. Daikaiju
The Shadows vs. The Surfrajettes

I prefer traditional stuff. Modern sounding drums really squash the vibe for me and anything that pushes it toward that dubious "surf rock" appellation has me reaching for my Thom Starr & the Galaxies disc.
Some of my favorite current bands:
Satan's Pilgrims (hometown heroes!)
The Wavechargers
The Miramars (come on guys, where's that damn CD??)

Well, I definitely like the Surfragettes, but I would say that I’m mostly attracted to the old school bands.

Given the chance, I would rather embrace the Surfragettes

I think that I have come to prefer the newer surf music (typically 90’s to today for me)over the old. I enjoy the originals but prefer the greater variety that we get now when it comes to songwriting and arrangements if I needed to align myself with one or the other.

Awesome. I thought there would be more new-school fans. Can’t go wrong with the classics. But who are some good newer bands I should listen to?

Koby, here's a good place to start (though it doesn't include bands that have risen up in the last few years)

In addition to the NSSR list a look at the Gremmy Awards could be helpful. Hunter from Storm Surge of Reverb presents the award for new releases in multiple categories each year (best trad record, best modern record and many more):

And then there are some more modern compilations like "Brave New Surf" or "Monsters of Surf":

— Los Apollos - cinematic surf music trio (Berlin)
"Postcards from the Scrapyard" Vol. 1, 2 & 3 NOW available on various platforms!
"Chaos at the Lobster Lounge" available as LP and download on Surf Cookie Records!

All of them!
While I do listen a bit more to the modern and aggressive sounding Surf I find myself enjoying the old ones as well.

I like all the kinds that are good. Whatever that means - it's hard to articulate because it's totally personal and subject to taste. I find good music in all styles and from all eras. Also bad from same.

production of surf music has been all over the map over the decades...I listen to it all, and enjoy it!
However, when I make a record, I like it to have a bit of 70's vibe, not too polished, a bit of hair as they say...

Thanks for the info, everyone. I tend to prefer bands that give the genre their own unique twist. But it always has to stay rooted in the classic sound. I think that's what my band goes for overall. What do you guys think?

I like both old an new but lately gravitate toward the new(ish) ('60s Shadows being the exception)
Some of my favorites lately
The Merman - I could see it in the distance 2017
The Vanduras - In the Dark 2002
Three Balls Of Fire - FirePower 2002
Sandblasters - Cactus Stingray 1998

I think I split into a couple different camps
60s surf when I'm looking to reconnect to our roots,
then 2nd wave for cover tunes and
late 90's to present when writing or setting up tunes for parties.

Hey Koby,
You guys have made some cool music! I would say it blurs the lines between surf music and "instrumental rock" but whatever you call it, it's good.
That which we call a death blossom by any other name would smell as sweet.
