Being a Czech with Slovak blood too, anything Russian/Slovak or Bohemia seems to sound very "at home". The Eastern Euro/Russian influence on surf is evident in a lot of tunes.

Reverb for sure, but not dailed up all the way to create that splashy sound with the lead guitar these days. But will try to add more and see how it sounds. Some reverb still of course, but not a whole lot of drive/gain for sure... cheers!

Hey Dan, she gets to choose whatever guitar she feels like using for a particular song ofc. Sometimes she pays tribute to the original guitarist, say, Nokie Edwards used a Tele to play a particular song on stage once, so she would use a tele for the video shoot.

Then she has this thing about using a guitar she has never used (like at a studio, a band room or a guitar store), and she keeps telling me how a brand new guitar (well, perhaps a new type but not necessarily brand new) would give her an extra boost to play really well and feel hot. I didn't believe her as it didn't seem to make sense but after a few times, I had to agree with her. But most of these special or new guitars she was able to try, like a John Mayor Fender Strat, or a single cut PRS, or a custom shop Ibanez shredder type of metal guitar, all of them were properly setup, with the right action and string gauges she'd be comfortable with. She used a Squier Strat with 0.11 and NOT low action to do most of the practice when she was 7, so imagine picking up a guitar with 0.09 and super low action and a thin neck...then she could fly. I am not surprised that u felt you couldn't play that Gretsch that one time, as the string sizes and action might not be prepared in a way you were accustomed to playing so don't feel too bad. I think it's normal and that's why I thought what Mina told me didn't make much sense as it should be the opposite. With the guitars we use, they are all setup according to how Mina wishes them to be setup. Our luthier is really cool and takes good care of our guitars. We pay around USD30 each time a guitar needs to be setup. I find that we feel okay playing with different guitars because they are all setup well. I think it makes a whole lot of difference. Consider how many guitars we have, 30 bucks is quite a lot, but it is needed from time to time, or else playability of the guitars would decrease, and it's no fun playing...u know what I meant

Then in terms of what guitar to use for the videos tone wise, I must say, to our ears, with the use a certain pedals or a multi-effects unit, I think any guitar could produce pretty much the same sound we want to, regardless of what pickups the guitar has. Except the Jaguar i'd say....so it really depends which guitar she feels like using. For gigs, we do bring more than enough guitars as spares, as it wouldn't be right to play metal songs with a casino, or surf tunes with a metal shredding machine. Then drop E guitars if we have to sing, then drop D guitars for some metal songs we play, then surf guitars for being aesthetic... recently, we play lots of Japanese pop with our new long legged drummer and we have been trying to stick with the original band sound so we need humble buckers she said for the lead. I play the rhythm guitar and it doesn't make much of a difference for me. ;p

Hilarious yes, but it greatly increased my respect for those who plays different guitars well. Your daughter seems to ace those songs on so many different guitars, it's cool.
