We all know that Dick Dale, The Bel-Airs, and The Sentinals had repertoires outside of Miserlou, Mr. Moto, and Latin’ia. These were their signature songs, though. These are the oft played and oft covered. Do any of the post-1960s bands have signature songs? I ask because I don’t see a lot of covers of more modern tunes, but I imagine that Jon & The Nightriders, Bitch Boys, Bambi Molesters, et al, were long-lived and prolific enough to have played certain of their own enough to make them signature songs. But also maybe not: I’ve seen Surfer Joe play a few times and while there are songs he plays at each gig I don’t know if he can be defined through one song. Just wondering.

For the longest time Giant Cow was what people in associated with us (that was my impression). Probably because it was in semi regular rotation on Much Music in the late 90s/early 2000s, and would be featured in any tv interviews we did.
I am not sure this is the case anymore.

Thanks fellas! I'm familiar with nearly all of these. I'll have to look into the one or two that are new to me (always exciting!).

The Mermen- "Curve"
Pollo Del Mar- "A Flash of Green"
The Anacondas- "El Nino"
Los Straitjackets - "Pacifica" ( I understand that most people don't consider Los Straitjackets a surf band. That said, I've heard at least a dozen surf bands cover this classic song.)

First, let me say that I really like the concept of this thread. I made a list to add a few, but some the bands I'm going to mention have already been posted, some with a different song. I can't argue with the songs mention in Tim's list, and I have to remember to not just say my favorite songs, which are probably different from a signature song.
Here's bands not on the list:
Aqua Velvets- "Surfmania"
Pyronauts- "Sifaka"
The TomorrowMen- "Mobius Transformation"
Les Agamemnonz - "Salma VI"
The Mermen- "Pull of the Moon" (I politely disagree with Bob)
A signature song is the song you'd be disappointed if you didn't hear it live, and the song that a casual fan would recognize.
Anyone have suggestions for The Bradipos IV and Surfer Joe? I like so many of their songs, but do they have a signature song? "Fire Escape's Rope" is Surfer Joe's most listened to song on Spotify.
Keep it up!

For me the Bradipos signature is their cover of Titoli from the "for a few guitars more" comp. But I love all their stuff!
Lorenzo is so prolific it's hard to pick out one song.

I love this thread! The songs are all well-chosen, and I really can't disagree with anybody's choices.
Regarding the Mermen, my personal choice would be in agreement with Ferenc ("Pull of the Moon"), but after thinking about it, I figured it was a little too out-there for the trad guys, many of whom don't want to hear anything from the Mermen after the "Krill Slippin'" album. The signature tune for those guys and gals would probably be "Ocean Beach". So I split the difference, and came up with "Curve" which is trad enough that the Outer Wave regularly covers it, yet whacked enough for people like me. I couldn't argue with several other songs of theirs' being chosen, either.
I had a hard time coming top with a signature tune for the Bradipos IV. I wanted to choose one of their originals, but it seems like they always get the biggest response when they perform "A Fistful of Dollars" , or the "Everybody Up/ Malagueña/ Latin'ia" medley. Surfer Joe, the Kilaueas, the Tremolo Beer Gut, El Ray, the Bambi Molesters, the Space Cossacks, and so many more have so many great songs, that I couldn't possibly choose just one signature tune. I look forward to hearing more peoples' choices.

I know it’s been mentioned before, but I will reiterate that Frankie and the Pool Boys “Ewa, On the Beach” strikes me as defining for that band, and for contemporary Surf guitar. IMP, that captures the essence of Surf Music.

My favorite is "BAJA" by the Astronauts. There's just something about 3 guitars and a Bass & Drums that does it. I miss going to Pier shows and SG 101 for the last 3 years, I gotta get back to doing them again.

That is a defining work, in Surf. I never paid a lot of attention to the Astronauts, until fairly recently, but to my way of thinking, they were one of the best examples of the appeal of Surf bands, with a line of electric guitars delivering a homogeneous sound. To make that work as it should, took real skill and cooperation among the musicians. They were the real thing, and not just a bunch of “me too” guys playing catch-up.
