Permalink A wrap for our Japanese themed month of Surf rock: Chiisana Snack

New Topic

Not sure if people listen to this song still. I believe the Ventures played a cover of it as well. It was originally a song from a Japanese group in the 60s called Purple Shadows. Mina and I fell in love with this tune and often we play the intro or outro in gigs when we introduce the band members. It is a song equivalent to "love at first sight".

Mina did all the recording of guitar solo tracks by herself for the first time as I was tied up these days. We are trying hard to produce better sound quality and we hope you will enjoy it. The original artist used a Jag to play the song but Mina thought it sounds good using a Casino too and I agree. Wink

So, that's a wrap for our Japanese themed month of surf rock and this genuine Japanese song, Chiisana Snack (cover) from the 1968 concludes it. Thank you for all your support, encouragement and kind words in the previous month!!!! Happy May to you all and our surf passion fever will go on!!!!

This is so nice! And you daughter is a great player!

Thank you!!! She still has a lot to learn from a lot of the seasoned surf guitar players here. Wink

This song is on the most obscure of all Ventures albums, "Tokyo Callin': 60s Pop of Japan." Nokie played lead on that album, but the song listing is in Japanese and I did not know the title until now. Your happiness with the song shows, and your rendition is clean and smooth--I could mistake it for The Ventures.

I'd like to collaborate with my daughter but she lives thousands of miles away, and her instrument is the accordion. Well, there's always Out of Limits, and the whole polka thing.

Wow! it's Conrad! Thank you for your kind words. We still have a lot to learn when it comes to playing surf music and the guitar. I just thought we had to spend some time to enhance better recording quality. We used to do like 1 or 2 takes with 1 mic live recording. This recording took me 50 times on my part cos there are so many chords! It took Mina 1 whole afternoon too (on her own) and i am glad to see she has become more demanding and wants get the notes right. There is still room for improvement of course. We are just using very entry level gear and software to do the recording and rendering.

"Chiisana Snack" means literally "the white snack bar/joint". The lyrics are very romantic. The minute we heard the intro, we thought we had to learn the song. I didn't know the Ventures played it too in Japanese album till much later and I was quite surprised. And we used this song as a "soft closing" to conclude our MIJ themed month of surf rock. Here's our complete MIJ surf playlist:

And now, "out of Limits" is definitely one of the cool songs Mina and I must do in the near future. I hope she has time cos finals are coming soon and there are big summer gigs we have been invited to go to.

With technology so advanced now, you don't have to teleport your daughter to where you are and you guys can do a virtual jam or create a multi-screen video jamming a song you like. It'd be a lot of fun!!!

Good luck and thank you again!

Ray and Mina
