That was great. Even though I've only done limited listening to the European into/surf bands, it already seems to me (with the notable exception of the Surfites for one) that they tend to sound darker or more "ominous". Not more agressive than American bands, but perhaps it's Euro decadence--in the French literary sense--a little more emphasis on the perverse? Bad choice of word, but hope my point is taken. I'm tempeted to take some of that--especially in the case of TBG--as the influence of Link Way, who went to live in Denmark. A lot of the Euro instro groups seem to me to be more the spiritual heirs of Link Wray than Dick Dale. Like I say, I have a lot more listening to do. |

Here are some videos & pictures from Germany. We had a real cool time with TBG in Stuttgart. http://www.surfmusic-forum.de/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=969&p=4098#p4098 —

Hard to say. But for me, personally, you're right on! — |

I think you have a valid point. I always think of it as more Shadows than Chantays. I love both styles completely. There's a relatively subtle texture shift that I find really interesting. Compare The Bambi Molesters with The Eliminators. It's like different seasons in a way. Both totally work, and sound great, but invoke almost a different perspective on reverbed out instro rock. Good topic! —
