Please move this to another area if not appropriate here.

When somebody bumps an old thread, and I re-read the whole thread.
I notice many people that are not on SG101 anymore.

Where are they now?
Where did they go?
Why did they leave?
I miss all the discussion on here that we used to have.

I am new here but I read them also and wonder the same thing...

It bums me out, oh well....

People come, people go. Life gets in the way. I've seen something similar on a couple of other forums I frequent that are not surf intro based.

I also think a lot of the discussions have moved to Facebook. Bigger audience, only one place to check out all your interests.

There is some news about an upcoming release and a couple of shows from a well known band that was posted on Facebook. I haven't seen a peep about it here. I was lucky to see it; I've only been on Facebook four times so far this year.

Once upon a time I had like 10 websites I would visit regularly. Now I've got Facebook, Twitter, reddit and this sometimes. I have a feeling this site didn't make the cut for some.

I have noticed this, too. I wonder if a lot of people are simply laying low due to the pandemic...no gigs to play or go see, no SG101 festival to talk about. Dunno. For me, I have been doing a lot more writing and demo'ing at home and just keeping busy. Keeping calm and carrying on!

I'm pretty sure a lot of peeps are just lurking here too...
But, yeah, just that little bit more interaction would be nice ;)

Heya - I'm popping in here - haven't posted in a long time. I was in a band called Thee Jaguar Sharks. I look at the forum now and again, but haven't posted in a long time. Hope everyone is doing well. I'm looking forward to maybe seeing an actual live band soon.

I’ve participated in guitar forums for at least 20 years now. Forums have seasons, and forum members have seasons. I actually think that SurfGuitar 101 has done a fairly good job of retaining its character, in a changing world. I know that I have lulls in posting, even at the Gretsch-Talk forum, where I am a moderator. I’ve had times when I just felt like I didn’t have anything to say.

Also, I’ve found that my level of interest in both music and guitar-forums is closely related to whether or not I’m gigging. These days, I don’t gig a lot, but even a couple handful of per year are enough to keep me interested. The COVID 19 thing has stopped a lot of our life dead in its tracks. Australia seems to be in a state of nearly perpetual lockdown. They don’t even want people to talk to one another. This has to have an effect, and I would think all the more for the people at this forum, many of whom are actively playing gigs and tend to be very oriented towards social activities.

Currently. I post at two forums, Gretsch-Talk (because of my interest in Gretsch guitars) and here. One reason I am here is because I believe in this forum. It’s a good place and a lot of useful information is shared here. It’s a real asset to anyone interested in playing Surf.

It's very sad to see forums fall from favour in the face of the rise of Facebook and Twitter. It's very similar on the vehicle forums I'm on. Trouble is there's no archive on social media where on the forums there is a wealth of helpful information, insight and entertainment.

SG101 is still one I visit regularly and long may it continue. I've met new friends on here, and been astounded by people's generosity and aloha spirit.

(Slightly off topic, but I've also noticed that the internet as a whole is now dominated by traditional media, and even finding forums can be a challenge. For a brief moment in time, the internet was open to all, or at least anyone with a bit of technical ability or sheer determination. Now, websites are expensive and labour intensive. I really feel the high tide of free internet has passed, saldy)

I look at the posts here virtually every day. I hardly ever post these days though and I’m sorry to say that’s because most of the threads hold little interest for me.

I’m also a member of several surf music groups on Facebook. Most of the posts on those are truly terrible, I’m afraid. “Is (insert any non-surf guitarist you can think of) surf?” Blah blah blah. Maybe I’m just turning into a miserable old git!

When Facebook first came out, I was asked to join by a friend. Within a few weeks, I was “friends” with people I would never meet in person and know nothing about, except that their daughter’s boyfriend’s uncle once bought an ice cream cone from the nephew of the guy that cleans gutters in Poughkeepsie and somehow that makes me friends with someone I know nothing about.

I closed my account within a week or two.

Having come from a very close-knit community, where everyone knew everyone else’s business, I learned early in life that it’s better to keep one’s business to oneself. When you put your business out there for everyone to see, it’s a matter of nanoseconds before someone will decide that you’re doing things wrong and that they need to save you from yourself. The next thing you know, you are pressured into taking advice that is uninformed and harmful. It took about a week of Facebook before I had a sense of Deja Vu.

One thing I like about the forums is that you have a lot more control over the level of interaction. Disagreeing with a popular sentiment may bring a negative response, but that stays confined to the forum. Another thing I’ve learned in life is to partition my life. I don’t combine business with pleasure and while music is an avocation, I don’t want to drag music into my career and vice versa. A while back, a musician friend wanted to connect with me on Linked In, but I politely declined; Linked In is for professional contacts and I don’t want a prospective employer to get the impression that I would have my attention divided between my work and my avocation.

Facebook and Twitter are two things I will never be a part of, and I don’t think that they can even come close to the value of an online forum. Sadly, Facebook has siphoned off some forum members, but I will not ever follow that trend.

I still post and review on a pretty regular basis, but there is a lot of technical posts and gear related stuff that just don't interest me. It seems a lot focus is given to the same bands over and over again, and I lose interest in hearing about them. I also think it would help if the daily photos focused on new bands and splattered in a few older ones. But I digress.

I only paste on Facebook every few months; I can only see so many pictures of peoples' vacations, social causes and kids, but I like to catch up from time to time.

I used to post more on SG101 but a few year back I was hit hard with a lot of hostility and outrage when I was open about my Christian religious beliefs and how God influenced my surf "career" (if you can call it that). Since then I post mostly to comment on new writers, bands, videos and how to revitalize surf music. I keep my comments, emotions and personal beliefs to a minimum and try to address everything in a much more cautious and almost business like manner.

With that said, I love this website. Many times it keeps me going and lifts me up emotionally when I going through tough periods of my life. Over the last 3-4 years most everyone I've come into contact on SG101 has been thoughtful, supportive and honest and even though I may never meet many of you, I feel like we are friends.

I think the traffic will pick up again, if not, the ones left standing are people I enjoy interacting with.

I know what you mean. Facebook and Twitter seem to be a magnet for the inane. I really don’t need to know about it, every time someone buys a mocha, or when some stranger in Arkansas gets there battery terminals cleaned. Smile In my job, I get emails when an Internet circuit halfway around the world drops for a couple of seconds, so it’s not like my inbox is lacking for use.

BTD, I know what you mean. It's true that changes can occur in any of our lives, but it seems that a bunch of people stopped writing around the same time. As I recall, there was a disruptive force (I think he was named "Sam"), that was eventually sent packing, but I think it was during that time that a large group stopped writing. I'm glad that we still have representatives from across the country but I wonder how some of the others are doing. I think of groups like Boss Fink and Par Avion from out your way, and the Outer Limits from Pittsburgh and groups from the northeast who play at Otto's Shrunken Head. We get the listings for the shows but don't hear from them. I hope Unsteady Freddie is doing well also, and hope that those who have left will consider coming back. They are missed.

It’s surprising to me, how often one new member of a forum can change the barometric pressure, and usually not for the good. Sometimes people come in, guns a blazin’ and think that they will reshape the forum to their notion of what is right. Usually, these same characters leave as fast as they arrive. Sadly, the aftermath can be difficult.

One thing that enables this, is that SG101 is relatively a very small forum. More crowded ones are more used to identifying and handling these 'subversives'. As long as someone doesn't derail things too much, we're open and even enjoy displays of craziness. For better or worse, lovely people here, giving one chance after another, incredible patience.
