New Topic

Dick Dale will be at the Museum of Natural History in Santa Barbara this Saturday. I heard an interrview on a local NPR affiliate this morning. I did not know that DD invented the first power amplifier, Les Paul, Leo Fender and electricity. You have to love the guy.

are you kidding, mr. dale invented electricity, for crying out loud!

he goes way back!

Well..Dick did come up with the outboard reberb unit and the slightly different output transformer for the Dual Showman...also had a lot of input re: the ultimate cab design for the DS as well....not sure about electricity...

The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
presents
Dick Dale: King of the Surf Guitar
Saturday, August 4
8:00 PM; Fleischmann Auditorium

"The King of the Surf Guitar," Dick Dale single handedly created the
surfing sound in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A true surfer who
surfed sun up to sundown, he has always explained his sound as a
sonic representation of the waves and the thrill of surfing.

One reason the surf culture developed its identity - and its musical
sound - was the screening of popular movies like "Gidget," that were
based on the free spirited beach culture. Dick Dale, The Beach Boys,
Surfaris, and others gave Americans a California sound that swept
the nation.

Following the rediscovery of "Misirlou" for the movie Pulp Fiction,
Dale's career was rejuvenated and he has continued to record new
material and tirelessly pursue a grueling tour schedule. Members
$28.00; Non-members $32.00.

Meet Dick Dale at an exclusive post performance reception! Members
$40; Non-members $60 (includes the concert). Limited tickets
available. To make reservations for the reception, call
805.682.4711, ext. 170.

whoa, that is a lot. i think the last time i saw him it was $15 and he hung out and signed stuff and talked to people for well over an hour.

Well..there are several versions but...Dick wqnted something to make his voice sound fuller...my understanding is that he tried running a mic through a pulled reverb unit ..not sure what it came out off..hammond?...didn't do much for the voice but after working with Leo came up with the outboard reverb and used it for guitar....Dick's playing would blow out speakers..they tried several methods of mounting the speakers and sometimes the brackets would bend ....the tranformer/circuit diff is small ..as I recall there is one resistor with a different value but the transformer..agian from what I understand will peak at 100 watts for the DS where the Showman peaks at 85 watts... There is no question that Leo and Freddie Travers used DD as a field tester for his products...I was not there...kidding about the electricity! Dick still stays after for an hour or more to chat etc...I believe this event is a charity affair..$

The couple of time I saw him live, he hung around after the show and talked with folks at the foot of the stage and signed and posed for pictures for as long as they wanted. I was really impressed with that. He seems to genuinely enjoy meeting his fans and talking.

At Dick's last show in Petaluma, he stayed after as usual to chat and sign...even went out into the street to sign the dashboard of some guys car..Covair I believe...came back and posed for a pic with our band in front of The Mystic ..speaking of, he's back in Sept w/The Pyronauts opening...

I heard that Dick Dale taught Benjamin Franklin how to fly a kite? And that he molded the key Ben Frank used himself with his bare hands? He then went to The Plains Indians, and taught them how to do a 'Rain Dance', and well, as they say, "The rest is history."

DD is the coolest!

I've found that Dick as a rule, can back up what he says. He's a VERY straightforward guy. An intense musician who knows how he wants his sound....this fact has sometimes put him at odds with studio engineers he's worked with. No, I don't think he "taught Ben Franklin how to fly a kite" neither do I think he walks on water. What I DO think is that he a no BS guy who cares about people. He took the time to write a review for our new cd...we cover a whole 2 of his songs on it..don't think that will pay for early retirement. Bottom line..not everyone can deal with people like Dick who are VERY direct...so like him or not..if not for his music most of us surf players would be playing pocket pool..not surf music...... Cool

I would never belittle his contributions or his influence, but if you ever listened to him speak you would know that there is plenty of BS involved.

No, he can't back up what he says because half the people on this list can come up with proof that he did not invent certain things.

No worries friends..we can agree to disagree...I don't really care what "proof" yay or nay some may have..or not....again, I was not there talking with Leo in the early days ...were you....

I heard he invented the air we breathe.
