The other day, Musician's Friend had MXL 990 condenser mics on sale for 69.99 as their stupid deal of the day, and regular price they are 99.99. They've gotten loads of good reviews.

And I just see that they are 25% off with the "joy" coupon, but only for today - that would get you under $200 easy.

Thanks Squid and Edward. That won't work though, I'm looking for 2 overhead drum mics. I should have been more specific.

Rode M5. They come as a matched pair and are just in your budget. I use them as overheads at one of the venues I work at. They are fine.

Danny:
Look for a pair of these, the Astatic CTM-1000A. Try to aim for $50 a mic. Use the omni capsule. Price be damned, these are excellent mics that people often compare to Schoeps SDCs, and not at all surprising since it is a clone electronically.
This mic, marketed by Astatic (the folks known for pedestrian commercial install gear and CB radio mics, etc.) is identical in every respect to the CAD Equitek e70, so if you want to cruise the reviews first, that is what you will want to look for.

Another funky option is the NEAT Worker Bee MDC. I have used these on overheads. It is actually pretty damned good! About $90 a mic. Used to be twice that, but word is that they are restructuring as part of Gibson brands and liquidating. Check reviews for samples of drum sounds.

People seem to like the following mic, a LDC, as well. YMMV.

I have those MXLs and give them a thumbs up. Did a great job stereo mic’ing a grand piano in a jazz trio setting. Cheap enough to take risks with. I have more expensive condensers but these won’t betray you.

These odd mics are really cool. I have a Red one that I use for all my acoustic recordings. Well priced, and great customer service.

These are all great choices, IMHO. In truth, we are in the golden age of microphones. Well, recording gear and musical instruments in general, really. You can get so much for so little, it is frankly quite unprecedented.
