I listened to all the tracks, and I think I left a comment on every one. This is an outstanding snapshot of the talent on this forum. There are bare bones demos and fully realized pieces. Congratulations for everyone who had the courage to contribute.
So much great stuff, but I think my two favorites are Gimlet's "This is the Way (Surfings with the Madalorian" and The Cholla's "Spaghetti Jungle."

No problem! I hope you guys like it! We are a pretty new band.

Anyone care to share what they used to do the mastering on their submissions. I'm impressed.

Sony Sound Forge Pro.

There are some very helpful videos relating to mastering basics on youtube.

I am always challenged trying to deal with the "GIGO" principal.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Ed, thank you for stepping up and volunteering to help do mastering Big Grin .

Your recording master is fantastic. So clean, lively and full of headroom. I love it and I should know. I've got a couple of great playback systems in my house. There is no stopping the volume on my house system. I can crank your song really hard without any shrill fatigue. Did you record on this software or just master?

I'm going to start the research.

Thanks for the kind words SD.

I record tracks using my old Mackie 32-8 into an Alesis HD-24 hard disk recorder. I've been pretty happy with both units. I have a pair of DBX-160X compressors tied across the main outs on the board which are acting as basic limiter/levelers on the output signal, being fed into a stand alone Sony CD player/burner. I try to leave at least 5db of headroom on the basic finished mix writing to the CD file, which I then transfer to the computer (manually) where the "mastering" is done with the Sound Forge software. Whew.

Being an old dude and with 50 years spent standing in front of loud guitar amps, my hearing is pretty much shot. I try to perform A/B comparisons of working mixes to tracks that sounded good to me years back as my frame of reference. That and listening to potential mixes through multiple different sets of headphones, two different near field "reference monitors," my car speakers and the onboard speakers in the MAC computer upstairs is pretty much the norm. I go through blank CD disks like clay pigeons at a gun range........

Often times, I have a good laugh at myself sitting there, in front of the Mackie thinking "I can't hear squat and I'm trying to write, record, mix and "master" a track?" I must be nuts. I hope you can see the humor in this too. It is pretty funny.

One other thing is I've been told is to try to never add EQ to an individual track. Remove it yes, add it no. I you have to add much to "get the sound." re-record it from a different perspective.

I also try to keep in mind that "less is more," but unfortunately I never seem able to believe it.

Cheers,

ed

Thanks Ed! Great play by play! This is good news because I have the Korg 32 XD that I typically do everything on. I just feel that if took the mix to better mixing tools on a pc so i would basically do it the same way just different tools to start. I'm going to keep learning more about the software. It's not cheap.

For mastering in Logic Pro I use Ozone, or BX Masterdesk (my current fave). Sometimes I will use Triumph.

I use the "Multiband" mastering effect included in Sonar Producer. It has enormous ranges of adjustment.

Cool

I thought I wasn't and decided just over an hour ago I'd retrack the guitars, mix, and upload. Hope it's up to snuff!

If you wanna take another day or two (or three...) go ahead MJ. I'm probably not going to put everything on archive.org until next weekend.

Still have two more tracks to publish... stand by for that...
