I use an MXR Carbon Copy. It is pretty versatile and you can dial in some pretty good analog delay sounds. I don’t think it is in the Strymon league , but it does a fine job. I mostly use it live to create a fuller guitar sound in our trio.

I use both MXR Carbon Copy and TC Electronics Flashback but when I listen to traditional surf music there is no delay. Delay is not really part of the surf sound no matter how much we love it.

There’s a lot of delay use in modern surf and I like it. Great example is Ivan Pongracic. If you just wanna stick to 60s traditions, probably yes, no delay!

I'm a fan of the Keeley Mag Echo. it's a kind of echoplex thing without going TOO nuts trying to recreate the exact sound. but you can dial in some wow & flutter type stuff.

I always loved the Dan echo too. That tasty low-fi-ness. But if it is the best for surf??
Does it need echo? Endless discussion. It's a matter of taste, no?
