My surfy Bear is connected to 2 reverb pans , a short and a long pan.
The short pan is a 2014 Accutronics 8AB3C1B
The long pan is a 2014 Accutronics 4AB3C1B
The short pan always sounded dense, lush, thick, huge, over the top, cavernous, to the point of being unusable. It's easily twice as loud as my long tank.
The past week I bought another short 8-pan to integrate in my Fender Champion 600 (as onboard reverb).
It sounds nothing like the other short pan. I know no two pans sound the same but the difference is immense. It sounds more like my long pan.
So far the only difference from the outside I can see is that the new short pan is from 2018 and has "RA" printed before the type:
"RA-8AB3C1B"
I thought at some point they made a change in the production and added the "RA" to distinguish between them but:
I find older pans with the RA
I find newer pans without the RA
Ayone an idea what the "RA" stands for?
Examples:

My guess it's just a meaningless catalogue short for "Reverberation Amplifier". There are enough characters as is for describing the function...
Have you measured the ins and outs of both the 8 types? maybe it could clue to the difference.

I measured the DC resistance of in and out. Input was pretty much the same but hard to tell when it's in the couple of Ohms range.
The out was significantly (?) different: 280-ish vs 260-ish. (IIRC)
That would be a 10% difference, maybe the input had the same difference: 1,7 vs 1,9 Ohm. Just hard to tell in this range as it changes depending on how I hold the probes.
Another difference I noticed (so far) is that the RA-versions come with mounting rubbers, the non-RA's come without.

I believe the R stands for "Revision", A would indicate the first revision.
At least that what the R stands for on my Ampeg bass head. RH is "Revision H" which was the 8th revision of that model.

Did you do this comparison by hooking up the new pan to the Surfy Bear or just listening to it in the amp?

Looking at the dates on those labels, that doesn't seem likely.

Trying to compare apples to apples, I hooked up both to the Surfy Bear.
I still need to figure out exactly how I'm going to integrate it in the Champion 600.

I figured you were comparing them directly, considering how meticulous you have been in other technical posts - just wanted to make sure. I've got a short pan in my SurfyBear build (because of the size of the enclosure I wanted to use), and I've found it's also really overwhelming and needs to be tamed, so I'm interested in whether this RA thing actually means something that makes a difference.
Otherwise, have you tried calling or e-mailing Accutronics directly?

I did but never got a reply.
However, I noticed something similar to Belton pans:
There's RBL2AB3C1B and BL2AB3C1B
So, I'm thinking:
RA = Reverb Accutronics
RBL= Reverb Belton
It still doen't explain why the RA is used on both older and newer pans or why no RA is also used on older and newer pans.

Eventually I e-mailed TAD or tubeampdoctor.com (the European distributor for Accutronics) and was told that the pans produced for them have the RA prefix.
Andreas from Tubeampdoctor.com:
we only stock higher quality Accutronics line of the reverb cans made by Belton. Our(!!) part numbers for these start with "RA" means "R"=Reverb and "A"=Accutroncis.
Lots of additional info in an upcoming thread. (will put the link here later on)
