Permalink The Gremmy Awards: My favorite surf records of 2018

New Topic

I listened to an awful lot of surf records this year and so throughout December I combed through them and chose my favorites organized into subcategories.

The whole list is here and there's a lot more writing about all of them on the site: http://www.stormsurgeofreverb.com/content/introducing-2018-gremmy-awards

Each category lists honorable mentions and an eventual winner. I'll italicize the winner of each.

I'm mostly posting this because I'm curious what everybody else liked this year. I know there's some albums people loved that didn't click with me...

thanks for the Magic # shoutout man Smile

I really liked Sheverb's album this year, it would easily qualify as a promising debut. They're coming at the music from a spaghetti/psych angle, so perhaps it's in the wide world of surf-adjacent music.

The Spoils - FB - RN
Second Saturday Surf in Austin, TX - FB

Some of my favourites from 2018 did not make it into the Gremmys. In no particular order:
Monokini - Systopia
Bradipos IV - Lost Waves
Surfer Joe - Swell of Dwell
Tikiyaki 5-0 - Tone Control

And I really think the Kilaueas could have won the prize for best artwork just as well! (And imho I would put all of my picks above in a higher position in that category than "Center of the Surf" by the Madeira.)

But these are of course all matters of individual taste. It's cool that someone puts in the effort to present an award like this, and it even has the perfect name! Smile

Los Apollos - cinematic surf music trio (Berlin)
"Postcards from the Scrapyard" Vol. 1, 2 & 3 NOW available on various platforms!
"Chaos at the Lobster Lounge" available as LP and download on Surf Cookie Records!

I think finding that name was half the reason I did it in the first place Smile

Big Grin Simon, the Kilaueas cover is my favorite of the year, too, and I think it should have won, FWIW! But I think that maybe you're misreading Hunter's lists - the top name on each list is NOT the winner - the winner is the bottom name on each list (the one that's italicized). It's a bit confusing, but the way I read it (and correct me if I'm wrong about this, Hunter) is that the list in the inverse order, and the closer the band is to the bottom, the closer they got to the top position. Just thought I'd point this out.

The Blair-Pongracic Band on Facebook
The Space Cossacks on Facebook
The Madeira Channel on YouTube

Honorable Mentions are basically all equal and mostly arranged in the order I wrote them (though sometimes I might have positioned things here or there because I knew there'd be some psychological desire to order them), bottom of the page is the winner.

Yes Ivan, I did get that the Madeira did not win best album art. Or anything else. Big Razz
But I'm sure you would have, if it had been a new studio album or if there was a category for best live album.

Glad to have some discussion about actual music. I kind of didn't listen to any surf music in 2018, so I'd love to hear what everyone thinks.

Thanks a lot Hunter! Amazing effort. Any chance this happened for past years? So interesting!

Pretty sure you're right, and I think I used to switch back and forth because the Grammy allusion is a little more overt with a Y. But I probably should have stuck with -ie because if you google it you almost always get "did you mean to say Grammy awards?"

Agree 100%, Brian! I definitely listened to a good bit of surf music last year, but far less than in the past, so I feel a little out of the loop.

Hunter, this is a great thing you're doing! We are again so honored over your accolades! I say (and mean it) often.... THAT'S SOME GOOD COMPANY!!

Oh nice I’ma hafta comb those lists when this job ends in May!
