On this day five years ago I was deeply honored at the Surf Guitar 101 Convention: I was first surprised with an Award of Merit certificate by Brian Neal and Jeff BTD Hanson, and then presented by Jeff with a Dakota Red US-made '65 reissue Stratocaster, donated by another SG101er, Paul Wayne AKA ColtSurf, an incredibly nice and generous man. It was the shock of my life, I had no idea it was coming - everybody in on it did a great job keeping it secret! Jeff previously asked me to go up on stage in between bands to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Paul Johnson, which was a huge honor in and of itself. As I got up on stage to do this, Jeff had me stand in the back and Brian instead started talking on the mic to the audience. I remember being completely confused, thinking, "Why is Brian talking about me?" It's only when he said something like, "....which is why we're here to honor Ivan" that it dawned on me what was happening. I was deeply moved. Words fail to express my CONTINUED thanks to Paul, Jeff and Brian for this. I'm still very grateful to you, fellas, and in disbelief that this actually happened. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I got to use the guitar shortly after being presented with it, by playing rhythm guitar for Martin Cilia on the Atlantics' immortal "Bombora" at the Convention! See the video at the bottom.
I went on to use it to record most of the Madeira's 2015 album "Ancient Winds", and love it very much! (I did have to change the neck last year since it started to cause some pretty painful problems with my hand, being a very thick neck - and me playing it far too much! That neck has now been replaced by a super-thin and unbelievably comfortable '62 reissue Strat neck from 1986 which used to belong to - EDDIE BERTRAND!! This is one amazing and incredibly special guitar!)

You deserved it Ivan, you've done so much to further the cause of surf music. Not only being a constant source of support for up and coming musicians (myself included) but by inspiring so many of us with your music and musicianship.

Thank you so much, fellas, ESPECIALLY Danny! I greatly appreciate your extremely generous comments! Surf music has been such a huge part of my life for the past nearly quarter of a century, and has brought so many wonderful things my way - most importantly great friends! I never expected any of that when I first got it into it, but I can't imagine my life any other way now. Thank you all very much again!

Thank you VERY much, Ferenc and Brian! Both of your friendships have been a HUGE thing for me over the past 10-15 years! And your own contributions to our tiny little corner of the music world have been immense, as well - surf music would not be anywhere near where it is today without you two! It's been an honor to be your friend and to be able to contribute alongside you both!

So do not be afraid of coming to this year convention) They already know your favorite neck size)))
Without joking - it is well, well deserved, Ivan. I've told it to you in Livorno, you just cannot imagine how many people around the world are inspired by you music and your contribution to SG101 and surf community generally is unbelievable.

Such a fitting award and recognition of someone who I consider THE ambassador of this music in the current times.
Ivan, your incredible talent inspires so many players and listeners - the practical aspect of the award being a guitar that you have used to continue this cycle of creating and sharing music is perfection.
Cheers,
Jeff

I'll always regard it as one of life's highlights to have seen you play and hold close the "just two guys talking" opportunity before the show. The latter is often the real window into the person.
The presentation of that guitar is not only a symbol of your personal impact musically, but the huge chunk of institutional memory that must be part of the instrumental surf music community.

I'm deeply, deeply flattered by all of the comments. I REALLY didn't post this to fish for compliments , but to express my gratitude once again. I'm actually truly humbled by all of your statements, and not really sure what I can say except, thank you very, VERY much. I greatly appreciate all of your friendship, and hope to see you all again soon.
