Permalink High-reverb Telstar, New Arrangement for Twangy Guitar

New Topic

As high on reverb, twang, vibrato and spaciousness as it is in the sky, a new Telstar arrangement. What's new? Chords are played underneath melody instead of one-note-at-a-time. The resulting combinations are unusual chords associated with extreme (non-rock) jazz, yet here they produce no jazz feel (IMO), they just rock, and they rock hard.

The selected pickup is the middle position single coil, an EMG SA. All guitar effects come from the Zoom G1Xon pedal, including the great "Springs 63" impression of an outboard reverb tank, recorded direct. The guitar is a Steinberger USA with an aftermarket vibrato bridge not intended for it but highly responsive, as you can see. My secret ingredient is my DIY guitar pick.

A beautiful piece of music, and beautifully played may I say. Makes me want a zoom gx1on. I've been pondering about those recently. Telstar had an unbelievable uplifting quality, almost spiritual

Thanks for your generous comment, Vince!

I am delighted with the Zoom because it makes combining effects easy, it is small, very light and reliable, and it has many gorgeous effects. For this Telstar recording I used Zoom's impression of a Vox amp. In a previous video on YouTube ("Waterfall") I used Zoom's impression of a Fender amp.

Who would have thought Telstar sounds so good as a guitar piece!

The original and other covers I heard (tremolo picking it all the way...), are all so centered on the melody line, that as much as sweet it is, it becomes tiring after a while. Your exploding it with chords and reverb and vibrato is so fulfilling. Nailed it, amazing job!

I like a lot of instrumentals from this period because they were hits due to having a strong melody. So many surf related bands now rely too much on riffs, clichés and style over content.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments Ariel, crumble and Vince. That's impressive writing, Ariel!

Melodies more than riffs was my intent with "Flying Guitars" and "Guitar Fun v2" the latest Insanitizers albums. For "Rocket Pack" on Guitar Fun my method for writing melodies resembled Telstar in that each melody begins with strong notes within the chord but as the melody continues the strong notes are often outside it. "Rocket Pack" has four different melodies; here is a link to it: https://soundcloud.com/conswartz/rocket-pack
