Permalink The Breakaways: Great Stuff!

It's probably not news to the hardcore Surf fans, but only recently was I put hip to The Breakaways and I am truly impressed. Their sound is in line with the classic sound of First Wave Surf, but IMHO a bit more sophisticated. A minor sidetrack might explain it this.

When the Doors came out with Riders on the Storm, I loved the sound of Robbie Kreiger's guitar, which was clean, employed tremolo and sounded somewhat reminiscent of the Surf music which had preceded that song by nearly a decade. While it is primarily a piano song, Kreiger played some chords that were just what the doctor ordered, subtle, but somehow piercing because of their apt placement within the song and being voiced perfectly.

I hear the same sort of thing happening in The Breakaways music, as the two guitarists work to compliment one another, over the rock-solid foundation of bass and drums. On one of their albums, the drums are Bongos, and sound perfect. I had thought along the same lines myself and hearing their album serves as ample proof of concept.

The songs consist of classic Surf and a few originals. The division of labor between guitarists seems equitable and both Bruce McCoy and Craig Skelly are capable of holding up their end of the bargain. The overall effect is perfect. The music is strong, but not overwhelming; mellow, but not wimpy. The arrangements are creative, the playing is solid.

Music like this is why I listen to Surf.

Great band, great guys. Craig sent me a CD a couple of years ago and I listen to it all the time. In fact, I was listening to it on the way to work this morning. Yes

The best way to thank us is to keep on keeping on. We gotta keep this music alive.
