Besides "Blackline" (Paint It Black and Pipeline), are there any surf tunes that blend popular, well-known songs within them to make the listener say "hey...I know that melody"?
I'm trying to think of classic covers that would fit nicely within traditional surf standards using the same chord structure, tempo, or both.

There was a local surf group in NYC about 20 years ago called
"The Human Tornados". They released one CD that is an absolute gem. On it is a surf take on a popular tune called "WAVE" by jazz guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim. I had heard the pop group Brazil 66 perform it with vocals.
From what I've been told, it was so well thought out and arranged with all HT band members knowing their guitar and drum parts, that it was completed in one take. How often does that happen?
It's on youtube... Check it out

Probably not exactly what you are referring to but this is my favorite crossover/hybrid of all time. Brilliant!

I know a bass player that likes to do a solo of Day Tripper/Sunshine Of Your Love in the middle of The James Bond theme.

How crazy, we released our surf version of Wave in 1997 on the opposite coast and had a totally different arrangement, more based on "Tequila". We had never heard of any band doing it before, so I wonder if it was coincidental or if they had heard ours and did a different take...?

Spskins,
That would be hard to determine now. Based on what little I know of the two guitarists in the Human Tornados, they liked the Shadows but mostly composed their own material. One of them no longer plays. That's rather sad as he arranged and played lead guitar on their CD cut of "Wave" and played really well. You can also see him in various youtube videos of a group he had called "Beat Rodeo". The other guitarist was and still is in his own world, musically. So it would be difficult to say where they got the idea.
Your thinking is quite possible. That HT CD came out in 1997.
But I'd slant toward "coincidence" for now.

All,
I found this video of the group I mentioned here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z10GmA7JtNI&list=PL8PIQJFjOZ2OK-SOR6pK_Z_w-RICeVlYZ
They don't play WAVE but of note:
This video was resurrected from one of the guitarist's 21 year old VHS tape. They do play their other material from the CD.
And -
As I viewed the show, low and behold, there is about 4-5 seconds of a very young Ivan Pongracic, Jr. a.k.a SG101 IVANP at about mile marker 13 minutes with the show's credits flashing.
The stuff that's comes out of the woodwork when you least expect it.

There was another video of Wave and I have to say, they did a nice job of it. I wasn't sure how well it would come across as a Surf tune, but they nailed it. Whoda thunk????

One thing I like in Jazz are the “quotes” of other songs worked into improvised solos. I’ve incorporated this in other forms of music, occasionally. When we play Secret Agent Man I roughly quote Black Magic Woman during the solo.
Surf lends itself well to this, because the changes are straightforward and share something in common with a lot of other songs. I’m not sure if this fits with what the originator of this thread had in mind, but I thought I’d toss it in.

As far as quotes are concerned, here's 2 "almosts", interesting coincidental riffs (just the intro's). Not implying anything, just similarity. Love both.
EDIT: correlating Madeira's "Arcadian Voyage" and "Ancient Winds" respectively.

A little off topic; we play a lot of surf music, but our cover of "Wave" is probably closer to a typical jazz band's.

I agree. That’s a beautiful job on everyone’s part. I really liked the arco work from the bassist, you don’t hear that every day and he handles the bow very well; great solid sounds there.
I’ve done a chord-melody version of Wave for decades, but have never had occasion to play it with a band.

Many moons ago the rockabilly band I was in did a cover of "Walk Don't Run" that slid into "Stray Cat Strut." I suppose we could have also segued into Richad Hell & the Voidoids' "Blank Generation" if we'd given in a couple seconds more thought!

I’d say that applies to the entire band. That is truly nice work. Wave is not for the faint hearted, the changes are pretty complex.

Where in Walk Don't Run did you start Stray Cat Strut? I am guessing the logical place would be right after the short drum break before the last verse.
