Incorporating well-known songs within a surf tune.

They released one CD that is an absolute gem. On it is a surf take on a popular tune called "WAVE" by jazz guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim. I had heard the pop group Brazil 66 perform it with vocals. From what I've been told, it was so well thought out and arranged with all HT band members knowing their guitar and drum parts, that it was completed in one take. How often does that happen? Based on what little I know of the two guitarists in the Human Tornados, they liked the Shadows but mostly composed their own material. One of them no longer plays. That's rather sad as he arranged and played lead guitar on their CD cut of "Wave" and played really well. You can also see him in various youtube videos of a group he had called "Beat Rodeo". The other guitarist was and still is in his own world, musically. So it would be difficult to say where they got the idea. Your thinking is quite possible. That HT CD came out in 1997. But I'd slant toward "coincidence" for now. J Mo' Top

They do play their other material from the CD. And - As I viewed the show, low and behold, there is about 4-5 seconds of a very young Ivan Pongracic, Jr. a.k.a SG101 IVANP at about mile marker 13 minutes with the show's credits flashing. The stuff that's comes out of the woodwork when you least expect it. J Mo' Top

I wasn't sure how well it would come across as a Surf tune, but they nailed it. I’ve incorporated this in other forms of music, occasionally. When we play Secret Agent Man I roughly quote Black Magic Woman during the solo. Surf lends itself well to this, because the changes are straightforward and share something in common with a lot of other songs. I’m not sure if this fits with what the originator of this thread had in mind, but I thought I’d toss it in. — The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. That’s a beautiful job on everyone’s part. I really liked the arco work from the bassist, you don’t hear that every day and he handles the bow very well; great solid sounds there.
