I love Deke, and I love how much Deke loves rock 'n roll. There's nothing more to say after that article.

An idea I got from the article that will most probably go nowhere with the RRHOF:
Why not have a "pioneers of rock and roll" category? That might get some rockabilly, surf, and bluesmen inducted. Shouldn't be much of a hassle - as most of them are very dead. Their estates might appreciate the acknowledgment, though. The closest I see to this category at present is a rather thin soup "Early Influences" category.
I remember the headache the Ventures went through with the RRHOF for several years before finally being inducted. Seemed to me like it was more trouble than it was worth.
Or -
In this internet age, perhaps a virtual,"alternative" RRHOF doing as I described above. The things you can do with servers these days.

Good idea, but as with any big business, the key word is business, they only want to induct bands that will help bring in more people. Sad to say

Link should have been inducted before they unlocked the doors on opening day!

Jeff, you hit the nail on the head. It is a business, it is run by businessmen. I think that because they have snubbed Link several times, there is no reason to want to be included by a group of people who continue to overlook him. It's like doing everything possible to be liked by the "cool" kids, who are really not that cool (despite them telling you that they really are cool).

Gotta laugh to keep from cryin' sometimes.
The hall of lame lost any credibility (long ago) when acts like, run dmc or nwa are in the alleged RNR Hall of Fame, before Link Wray.
Screw 'em.

Whoa! I shoulda read the article first. Deke did a hell of a job!

The hall of fame is just like Snopes. People for some reason assume it's worth two shits simply because it acts like it is. In reality, it's just some bullshit not even worth talking about. As if their opinion means anything.

Ole Deke don't pull no punches. I'm glad a player of his stature also has the guff to confront the Hollywood phonies in charge of the bogus 'award of distinction'. RnRHoF mocks Rock'n'Roll altogether. Dickerson's prose employs language of moral and ethical outrage witnessing that CHARACTER still matters.
Long Live Rock'nRoll! Death to poseurs!

Squink Out!

There was a Simpsons episode called Attack of the 50' Eyesores, about all the advertising icons coming to life and rampaging through the town. They defeated them in the cruelest way imaginable, they ignored them, and they went away. I think the RRHOF is a joke; obviously I am not alone. My suggestion is that we give them the attention they deserve.

Just because some entity declares itself to be the RRHOF means nothing. It's not like they went up on a mountain and came back down with a stone tablet decreeing them to be authoritative.

When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar.

Some people have brought up giving out awards at the SG101 con.
I don't even want to go down that road.
It's hard enough dealing with who's going to play.
Let alone who is getting awards.
No thank you, please.

You should get an award for posting that. Smile

It shouldn't matter how well known or obscure Link was in the eyes of the general public (who as we know, have the attention span of a gnat). It's the hall's job if it's worth its salt to do its curatorial duty to the set the record and educate! Not to pander to the lowest common denominator.

Sorry to derail, but the title of this thread reads like Link was snubbed by Deke Big Razz

Link doesn’t need to be inducted into some convoluted cockamamie club for music industry execs to milk more money out of artists/albums. Such an “honor” doesn’t validate anyone’s place in rock history, it just validates their continued mass marketability. Those who are actually concerned with history and not hype/sales generation are already aware of Link’s place.

Well said.

It strikes me that many of these awards have become so politicized that they have become little more than paperweights. I’ll never be a candidate for the R&R Hall of Fame, but I wouldn’t care to be. Some of the honors they have given out devalue the concept to the point that I wouldn’t care to be associated with it. Likewise for Oscars, Grammys or any number of other awards. If someone wanted to honor me (and I’m not suggesting that there’s any reason that should happen) the best way to,do so would be to send me a fat check so I can live out my days in the style to which I could rapidly become accustomed. I love this article, but remove any references to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That institution has never influenced American, or world, music buying or the legacy of artists in the public eye.

What people, all of us, need to do is write articles, talk to people, and spread on the love of the music we hold dear. That is the true legacy of music not Link Wrays jacket and a guitar hanging on a wall.

We can't let the Grammys and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bother us. We act as if these things are an attack on our musical taste and upon the artists we love. But be a Steward of your music, pass it along, speak about why you love it. Surf Music wouldn't be played today if we didn't disseminate it to wider audiences.

Every year i get someone asking me to 'vote' for this years candidates to the RNRHOF ...and I wont bother even pressing a few keystrokes on my laptop . That place is a joke and I refuse to coooperate ,even for my favorite artists. It does not please me to know that even if Link did get in , he'd have to share space with Bon Jovi or any of the many non rock n roll artists they deem worthy . I'm not playing along .
