Hey dudes and dudettes :
How can I get a decent tone out of a Squier Strat with humbucker(yeah that sucks but I could only find that one) and a fender Frontman II 25R amp. The problem is that the humbucker is really dirty. I tried raising the middle and neck pickups so I could use them instead, which improved my sound a bit but if you could give me some other advise. Maybe equalizing the amp... I don't know. I'm saving for a DiPinto Galaxie IV( image)
but until that I gotta use this guitar. Any advise is welcome.
Thanks
Mr. Green

Don't get a Dipinto, get a better amp. A great amp is more important, in my opinion, than a good guitar.

research the net on splitting the pickup into a single coil. Save up for a reverb tank too.

The thing is that I sorta love my amp although I know its not a great one but the problems I have are with the guitar mostly.
P.S. Are DiPintos bad quality or something ?

The humbucker is dirty because of your amp. Also, you can buy new picktups for your guitar. I would suggest new pickups and a tube amp. Fender Hot Rod series.

Fender Hot Rod series.
Dude get yourself a bandmaster/bassman/tremolux/showman head for the price you would pay for a piece of crap PC board amp. The tone will speak for it's self trust me you'll never go back to PC board or solid state amps, point to point is way better.

I'll never go back either.
Although I must say I prefer Mike's RI Vibroverb more than my old custom '64 Vibroverb. Kyle, I bought a '66 Super that is amazing.

Man I dig Mike's brownface Vibroverb, in a few months I'll be building a 6G16 brownface tan Vibroverb amp but this 1 will have a 12" instead of 2x10's, man the one thing I dig about the 6G16 circuit is it's vibrato I'm a sucker for vibrato Sweet I can't wait to see your '66 super! all stock?

Nope, not all stock. It actually has a '59 Bassman transformer. Also, the reverb circuit was messed up in the factory so that was fixed. I'm not going to play live with it.
I think you should do the 2 10s. You could build a 2x10 or 1x15 extension cab like Mike did.

I would agree that your amp may be holding you back a bit. Any one of the tube amps mentioned would help and I would throw in the new Kustom Coupe series amps to for consideration. I dont own one but played around with a 72 a little bit.....pretty versital amp, can almost nail Fender tube tone, and has ultimate tremelo ( yeah I like good tremelo too). Nothing wrong with Dipintos, just some think the have dead tone.......I dont see it ( hear it?) ......Galaxie IV has an kind of a tubby Telecaster/ jangly Rickenbacker kind of sound that some hate but I like and I too am saving to get one. One thing I think you need to remember about tone is about 70% of it is in your hands/technique. I always remember a band that played here from Austin on occasion. The guitarist main axe was a 61 Strat that sounded fantastic. But he also had a Kay that he picked up at a pawn shop for 30 bucks. He told of how bad condition it was in and how he had spent 3 years restoring it. He would play it on several tunes through out the night and it sounded just as good if not better sometimes than his Strat. That guy showed me that many times it's the operator and not the equipment that defines tone.

I just had to jump in this too. Mrgreen, I couldn't help but notice that you said "tone", not "sound." After all these years I've come to belive that "tone" comes from the player first. It is interpreted by his instrument (in this case guitar). It is then transfered from the guitar to the (in our case surf music) reverb tank, then to the amp. With this in mind and taking into consideration just how much some of my guitars inspire me. I'd zero in on the right guitar first........ed

Have you tried lowering the pickups, this may reduce the signal a bit,

Couldn't agree more - at least 50% of the 'quality' of the sound you make comes from your fingers. Someone else playing your guitar through your gear with the same settings can sound entirely different to you. Obviously, your gear can limit or enhance you - but it's not the most important thing.

BTW - To answer you question about the DiPinto...it's a great guitar and well worth the price. It's got tones that are sort of a cross between a Strat and a Jaguar. You'll love it.
Meanwhile, what you're trying for is clean and warm. A simple trick with your current guitar (since it's running a bit hot w/that humbucker) is to put in a "volume kit." You see them a lot in Teles. They allow you to turn down your volume without loosing the high end of the tone...it won't go muddy on you. The "kit" version I like to use is the .0022uF cap + 220K resister (Lindy Fralin's recommendation). With this in place, you'll be able to turn your amp up a bit and turn your guitar volume down a bit (maybe a quarter turn). Your tone will clean up and you'll have a little something extra to work with for lead work.
Here's a link showing you how to install the "volume kit." You can get the parts at Radio Shack.

I put these in all of my guitars (Strats, Teles, Jags, JMs, Jerry Jones, etc.) It makes a huge difference.
