Permalink Dale did not take of the nut and reverse it?

New Topic

I was reading somewhere that Dick Dale, just played his guitar upside down rather than the traditional way of taking of the nut and restringing the guitar. Is this true?

Dick's Stratocaster, the Beast, is a left handed guitar, but Dale still has it strung backwards. Presumably because that is how he learned guitar...just by picking up some random righty guitar and playing it lefty without restringing it. However, given the fact that he plays with monster string guages he also would have to have a nut cut accordingly.

Ivan actually got to fool with the Beast, and had a lengthy Yahoo Group post about it that we should dig up and get over here.

wow that is pretty wacked. Shocked

Man, it sure is something to see him play that thing live.

Yup...and his 2006 tour is starting up again in May. Another swing through Iowa...!

PS That photo was taken by my wife... Very Happy

That's a cool pic.....is that a Luke Skywalker sticker I see there?

I'll be seeing him on the 18th when he comes through Columbus. Can't wait.

I wonder what that rainbow-rubber-band thing is doing on the headstock? Maybe holding down his "A" string?

I just found out Dick is playing on Long Island on 2 different days this month! I am finally going to see the Legend!

Check out how his three lowest strings are strung backwards around the string posts on the headstock. They don't provide a straight pull - why would he do that??? (Dusty told me that he orders his guitar tech to string 'em up that way!) Also, what's going on with his G string?? (Talk about suggestive!) See how it seems to be pushed to one side as it gets closer to the string post.... Very weird.

Nevermind Ivan stole my joke before i could post it!

If you look he's got a pot re-drilled near the horn. What's it do? I read that he yanked out the tone controls and only plays with it "open".

The physics is boggling me right now. But maybe it has to do the way he perfers to turn the tuners to tighten or loosen the strings. Maybe he got used to spinning them a certain way when playing "right" handed guitars.

Umm, it was actually dp!

I don't think that's a pot - it's a switch. Since he uses an original 3-way pickup switch, he had another switch installed which allows him to get the inbetween pickup position. If that's what you mean...

Oh ok. Makes sense.

He also had a tuner under the pickguard at one point, apparently. I think its gone but some of the holes are still there.

Where/when is he playing on LI? I'm going to see him in June at CBGB's in NYC...

Could this be the the record for the longest time a Stratocaster has been a workhorse?
