Their original tune, Surf Rider, was in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction soundtrack.
Well, not exactly.

I'm WAY ready for this. They better get some good musicians to play the guys.

Our beaches here get 3 foot tall waves, but it doesn't matter. You don't need to surf to play surf.

The tune was indeed in that movie. The recording was not, but the statement didn't claim the recording.

The extremely syncopated rhythm guitar playing in the bridge of The Ventures' recording of Spudnik is far more jazzy than rock-n-roll. The feel is very different from the main melody. In contrast, The Lively Ones' recording of Surf Rider was straight surf rock throughout.
The Ventures have maintained that they are not a surf guitar band. This statement is consistent with their recording of Spudnik. Thanks to TuneFan I now know that The Ventures renamed Spudnik as Surf Rider in reaction to The Lively Ones.

Roots, C&W sound, slower tempo for Spudnik (than Lively Ones).

Definitely a different sound for the two groups.
