Permalink Please review my new song, Red Shift

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Hello again, everyone! Long time no see! For the small minority of people that know me, I am so glad to be back here. I removed myself from music for a while for personal reasons, and now I'm back in full-force and chomping at the bit to get some new material written and recorded! For the vast majority of you who have no idea who I am, Hello and I'm glad to meet you! You can check out my re-introductionhere.

This is one song that I just finished a few days ago. It's called Red Shift. It's for a solo project I'm working on called Neutrino Mass Experiment. It's a completely sci-fi themed surf album with a couple of moody, ethereal pieces mixed in for good measure. Everything you will here was written, performed, and recorded by me. I did program my drums though, I have to admit. I should probably mention that all of the guitar you hear was performed on a Jeff Senn Model 1. I borrowed it from a friend for the recording, but he may not get it back! The bass I used is a custom build by Dave Arndt. It plays like butter!

Anyways, please give it a listen, and if you feel so inclined, feel free to leave an honest review.

Thanks for having such an awesome site and terrific community! Surf's up!

I like it! I've always been a big fan of the sci-fi themed stuff. I enjoy the slightly-more-prominent-than-usual bass too. Looking forward to hearing more as you make it!

Thank you so much! The bass prominence probably comes from the fact that I've been a bass player for well over 30 years now. Until recently, I've only really tinkered with guitar, so this is new territory for me!

Thanks for the kind words!

Yeah!

Cool

Thumbs Up And (not a bass player) I like the identifiable bass in the mix. This is something that I note non-US bands seem to pay better attention to than most. It doesn't take much to get it recognized, but a very welcome thing (usually) when it happens. Hope to hear more from you & welcome back!
Cool

Very good. I like it.

Thanks, everyone!
I like to spend a lot of effort on the production of my songs, trying to get everything heard without any one thing overpowering the rest. Sometimes I'm guilty of having the bass too high in the mix, so I try to watch that.

I appreciate the kind words!

Hey, Badger. What part of the state are you in? Perhaps we could jam sometime. I'm in Waterford, myself.

Way on the other side. You're fortunate to be where you are, music-wise.

I like the composition. Some of the hard-panning is a little rough for me to take. Might be my ears, though. They don't seem to like a sound only in one ear.

Fantastic as usual, Fink! I'd best be getting that Senn back!! Also, I am overjoyed that you dig the bass that I built. Aces, Brother!!!!

Nice tune, Fred! I love the atmosphere!

A little confusing that some guitars sound only in the right ear but I guess you had some reasons for that.

Thanks for the awesome feedback, everyone!
To be honest, I hadn't really thought about the stereo separation thing. I will definitely revisit the mix and give it a few tweeks.
Again, thanks!

Very creative and a treat for the ears. Cool Exciting composition.

Thanks, SurfDawg!

I think that sounds like a lot of fun!
Great job, I'm looking forward to hearing more.
Mighty kind of Dave to lend you that Model One, you put it to good use. I really dig the rhythm guitar sound.
Now the only question is will Dave ever get the guitar back? LOL

and what about this bass Dave built for you?
You'll have to show us that sometime.

Cheers,
Jeff

Wow, thanks for the words of encouragement, Jeff! That means so much coming from you. Big Grin
To be honest, composing on guitar is pretty new for me, but that Model One just jumps to life in my hands and it made writing easy!

The bass is something that Dave put together for himself. I'm just borrowing it until I can get my own. The body was an generic P-Bass copy that he salvaged from an unplayable instrument that a friend gave him. He gutted it and stripped the finish off and refinished it with just clear nitro. The neck is a maple off-brand that he bought and tweaked to fit the body. I'm not sure what the brand of pickups are in it, but he did all of the wiring himself. It's strung with flat-wounds, which I'm not a huge fan of, but it sure makes it easy to play! He did a great job on it. I'll post a picture sometime if he's cool with it.

Thanks again for checking out my song!

On your guys advice, I went back and fixed the mix on this song and reposted it. Please give it a listen and let me know if that improved it at all.

Thanks for the constructive advice!

Think it sounds fuller. Cool
