We run the gamut. Clutch Draggin' & the Lug Nuts do Surf, but we've played everything from Miles Davis to Outlaw Country. I see boundaries as useful in categorizing music, but we choose our songs based on audience reaction and whatever we think will be interesting. We usually have a play list, but with 9 year's history we have a lot of songs in reserve, so it's not unheard of for us to change directions during a gig based upon audience reaction.

One thing that is consistent, most audiences like Surf and the occasional Spy song. Surprisingly, when we played car shows we didn't get much reaction to Surf. That really surprised me. I would have thought that the car show crowd would love Surf.

When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar.

Instrumental and melodic.

Instrumental

Melodic (as opposed to 'riffy')

I've had to be a bit strict with a "normal-ish song" rule as in a song with chords and melodies. Someone in my band has a very eclectic taste in music and I don't want my surf band to turn into a death metal polka band with beatboxed gregorian chants!

A part from that if it sounds good with reverb I'm good with it. We have a few jazzy latin sounding songs we are working on.

It just needs to be instrumental. Surf, garage, punk, etc, etc. If it speaks to us, we will play it. For us, boundaries imply that I am getting paid a handsome sum to create a certain style of music (that is definitely not the case)! If you like it, play it Smile

The goal with the group I'm starting is to go along a route similar to the Ventures. Mix in classic covers with originals of the same style. I really like Japanese and Finish instrumental groups. So Eleki and ratalanka right? I play very much in that style I guess. The drummer we've got wants to incorporate vocals and do like surf punk or something.. Maybe that's commercially hot but I just want to make music that sounds like it's from the sixties. For my group I definitely want a strictly defined sound. I'm not into all of the modern surf revival groups who take a revisionist approach but it's cool. It's all about making art you're happy with or what you want to hear. I do like where in the seventies The Ventures and Hank Marvin were playing with somewhat disco rhythms. I thought it would be fun to sort of go there. I can recall a rendition of ghost riders done with that Philly drum style with the "boots n pants n" hi hat going.

Guitarist of The Sea Gees! A group I'm working on putting together, more to come.

For my band, The Surfusions, the goal is to base our songs in surf but really push the limits and fuse in elements from any other style and see what happens. Sometimes it works better than others but I'm having a lot of fun with it.

I like that concept.

Anything higher than 185 BPM is a musical boundary of our band. Laughing

  1. Try not to be horrifically boring. 2. No Hawaiian shirts. (I personally opposed the second rule but was out maneuvered).

Groovy Guitar Groovy Guitar Headbang Groovy Guitar Groovy Guitar And, oh yeah. Not be overly painful to play. Wink

Cool

My main influence would be the Raybeats, so we probably play less actual surf than I think we do! Spy, soul, spaghetti western. Mostly original.
