Permalink Favorite surf show ever

Ok I know this may be hard for some.
as if you haven't been to any or just a few shows.
or if you have been to a lot of shows.
But talk about your Favorite show,
Who played,
what songs( if you can remember)
what equipment was used
how was the sound,
turn out
crowd reaction
venue atmosphere
etc.
basically what made it so special compared to other shows.

Heh. . . I can't honestly say I've ever been to a surf show. I can tell
you about the one I MISSED--back when the Cramps were touring
with The Bomboras. STILL kicking myself for missing that one! (My
wife's car wasn't working, so she took mine. . . couldn't get to
Pittsburgh that night!) Mad

Well, I've seen both The Reverend Horton Heat and Southern Culture
on the Skids about three or four times each, and they usually play
a few surf tunes, but it's 95% rockabilly. But good stuff nonetheless!

p.s. Surf bands don't usually come to central Pennsylvania. Sad

Is this something you can share with the rest of us, Amazing Larry?!?

Missed the Cramps with Starcrunch-era MoAM? as the opening act in Boston in 95.
Caught the Cramps later on, but when MoAM played in Brazil they were already on that phase I personally don´t care for. Rolling Eyes

Laika and the Cosmonauts at the Hole in the Wall Austin Texas 1990.

20 people in the place.

un-freakin- believable show!

The Thunderchiefs

I haven't been to that many shows, but the one that did it for me was in '99 I think - it was the D.D. show at the Bluebird Theatre in Denver - D.D. was great, but what blew me away that night was the local (from Boulder anyway) band "The Beloved Invaders" Up until that night, I didn't think that a surf band could play in Denver. They came out and played everything I had been listening to for the last 2 years. It was like they raided my cd collection and played all my favorite tunes! They dressed period perfect, and sounded extremely traditional - I made it a habit to see them whenever I could.

That show is why I'm in a surf band.

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

In no particular order and not including my own bands (or Link Wray or Davie Allen, who don't really count):

The Bambi Molesters
Man Or Astroman?
The Treble Spankers
Dick Dale
Huevos Rancheros
The Surfin' Lungs
Slacktone
Los Nachos
Jon and the Nightriders
Los Coronas
The Born Losers (OK, not really surf)
The Bitch Boys

Los Fantasticos

This is much tougher than first show. In my case they are the same. Seeing and hearing Slacktone for the first time left quite an impression. The Mercury Lounge in Goleta is similar in size and decor to the Lava Lounge so it was an intimate show with probably 30 people. I'd never heard so many different flavors of surf before and I couldn't believe the chords and melodies I was hearing, not to mention Dusty. As a guitar geek I didn't know who to watch.
That was 2000, as they were on their way Austin for Surf by Surfwest. I was kind of late.

Eight or ten years ago at the Galaxie in Santa Ana a full day of surf bands. DD finished up the night but the show stopper was Jon and the Nightriders.
Also a band called Evil Surf didn't show and Jon and Paul Johnson and a few others filled that spot. It was awsome!

Also there was Mike Palm (Agent Orange) Davie Allen and the Arrows and the Troquays (The Torquays were loud, best I've ever heard them)

Is that too much reverb?

I was at that show. My first Big surf show. was Jan or Feb of 97.

It was called the Bennifit for Ted. who was DD's old roadie, and had hurt his back real bad, and was to help raise money for his med. bills.
The Reventlos, Chantays,Surfaris, The Wedge(dd cover band), and a few others also played.

It started at 11 am or noon, but I got there around 3ish.
That all day event helped really pull me in, but I wouldnt call it a favorite show of mine, but it was memorable.

also Gary Hoey played with DD at end of the night.

Thats the one. The Reventlos rocked, I went right out and bought their CD.

Is that too much reverb?

That was a fun day, and our first chance to meet some real legends. Three shows stick out in my mind: Steve Soest called me in '95 or so and said to get my ass down to the Doll Hut to see some band from Finland. On borrowed equipment in front of maybe fifteen people, they just blew the doors off the dump---as good a band as you will ever see or hear. Second was a show we did many years ago opening for arguably the best line-up of Los Straightjackets. Huge fun. More recently was last years' Halibuts reunion. Never got to see them the first time around, and they really delivered---a fantastic show. As BTD said at the time, "now THAT'S a surf band!"

I would say seeing the Torquays play in Irvine in 2001 (I think) across the street from my apartment complex. Changed everything for me.

Toss up between Satan's Pilgrims/Ghastly Ones earlier this year or last year's Guitar Player Mag. showcase of Dave Wronski and Slacktone at the Boom Boom Room in SF - a 2.5 hour set - unbelievable. Then again there was the Phil Dirt retirement party...hmm... I just can't decide, I loved them all.

Well.......i'm "old school" and my favorite surf show is a toss up between The Beach Boys, The Kingsmen and David Marks and the Marksmen at the Sacramento Civic Auditorium in 1964 and Dick Dale and The Del-Tones and The Impacts in '64-'65 not sure but...at The Rose Garden Ballroom in Pismo Beach California. The Beach Boys show was really exciting and my cousin David and i got seats in the 6th row center from his dad (my uncle).... there was one overhead mic on the drums....NO monitors for vocals....all vintage Fender gear....i remember thinking "hey David Marks is in the Beach Boys isn't he?" i'm still confused about that....anybody know the story? I also remember the Wilson brothers' dad Murray was handing out b&w 8x10's and hawking other stuff out in front. After the show the BB's all came out thru different doors to try an escape the screaming girls and my cousin and i were at the door that Dennis came out of and we reached in and got to touch him as he ran for the limo.Seems silly now, but then it was a big deal to us groms!! The DD/Impacts show was in a small ballroom packed with surfers and wanna be surfers and was really intense and hi energy instrumental surf music even tho the Impacts also sang a few numbers. I also saw The Challengers and The Sentinals and The Trashmen and The Chantays and all kinds of great music there in Pismo. The benifits of living in a small coastal town in Cali in the 60's. OK, so you all know i'm 125 years old now....shoots, i don't care.

Aside from Jan & Dean at the Placer County Fair ('84 & '85... I think) it all happened for me when a friend from work told me about a band he thought I would like who were playing a litle dive in Portland... 1995-ish. I went into EJs and was blown away by Satan's Pilgrims. Capes. Great tunes. Exceptional musicianship! AMAZING!
Later that year, The Bomboras played the same venue with Jake setting his Farfisa on fire and Dave sprayed lighter fluid on his cymbals and they would let out a mushroom cloud like explosion when struck. And they had 2 go-go girls! AMAZING! (They did a Halloween show shortly thereafter featuring The Gallows... WOW!)

Matt,
I'm assuming that you are talking about Laika and the Cosmonauts?
I heard they also came back in 96.
I was not yet into surf then shamefully. But...
I saw them around 2000 there with Agent Orange and the next day at the Surf Museum, Yeah Laika was scary good live.

Man, what a question... I'd put in a few from my experience:

Satan's Pilgrims/Ghastly Ones (both shows)
S.P. with The Nebulas in Portland
Slacktone/Nebulas/Pollo Del Mar in SF
Phantom Sufers w/ two garage bands in Albany, CA

I am drawing a blank right now, but there have been so many over the years, I know there are a ton that I've forgotten.
