Permalink Link Wray in a pedal

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

What gets your vote for this? I do have some great small tube amps that get into the Link Wray territory...so this isn't about amps. Just curious about options for low gain pedals. I use a keeley modded blues driver which is ok, just fancy trying a different flavour

You need something to get that ripped speaker sound. Maybe a Greer Ghetto Stomp or one of the Supro pedals (?) The blues driver doesn't have the right frequencies to me.

The Dyno Brain by Nocturne pedals when dialed in heavy should get you into Link Wray territory. It's a replica of the Roland Space Echo preamp, and it goes from thick to gritty, but never into overdrive/distortion territory

I use a BYOC Silver Pony which is a "klone". The Klon is not known for being a sweet overdrive which makes it wonderful for a Link overdrive. I would think that even a Fuzz face with the fuzz dialed back would have enough vintage snarl. Germanium transistors moreso than silicon but just about any snarl is good snarl!

You might want to try out the JHS Supererbolt pedal. I don't own one, but I've heard them in action, several times. JHS has done a great job of replicating 50's-60's Supro amps. In the more conservative settings, the pedal has the sound of a low-fi amp on the verge of breaking up. When dimed, it sounds gloriously like a small tube amp about to explode. I need to find a dealer, and spend some time on one of these puppies. https://www.jhspedals.com/products/guitar-pedals/superbolt/

Thanks for that, some familiar ideas there. Had fun looking through the byoc site, that was new to me. Will dig out my joyo sweet baby pedal again to try some Klon style

One of the best and affordable new Klone clones is Electro Harmonix (EHX) Soul Foud. It is my always on pedal. For the real fuzzy, tube overdriven sound I use a EHX Hot Tubes pedal. It nails the Rumble sound perfect!

On stage I use my Soul Food into a Fulltone OCD, with both drives at 12 o'clock.

Thanks for that Arny, just the kinda thing I'm looking for and I'll go check the EHX pedals. I was looking at the OCD, how do you get on with that on its' own? I thought it may do the Link thing but guess it has way more gain than I'll ever need. Link's sound has that clean but dirty....dirty but clean sound. I often think folks give it too much gain.

A few years back, Tony at www.ballseffects.com made me a custom handwired tremolo pedal with a not so clean boost feature built into it that reminded me of the blown out Link tone. I then had him build just the single knob boost portion into its own pedal because I liked it so much. It's a primitive sounding circuit, dirty and crude, but has a real cool lofi LW vibe. For whatever reason we dubbed it the Orange Droolius. If I remember correctly it was right around $100.

That trem/OD sounds great, maybe a little like the recent Supro trem pedal with gain control....but a better price!

Any thoughts on the Wampler clarksdale? Expensive but interesting. Wouldn't gamble on it without testing

I thought this sounded great...airline amp, trem and reverb all in one pedal! I know airline are aiming to have it made in the USA and not the Far East but there's been delays

I agree with Danny, I think a boost pedal rather than an overdrive would be your best bet. Something like a Xotic EP booster or the Dyno Brain.

If you listen to Link Wray's tone it's really more of a slight overdriven sound rather than full on distortion. Too often these days bands overdo the overdrive when covering Link IMO.

Dave Wronski does a great demo of the tone and the vibrato effect in this vid:

Boost pedals and the dyno Brain are great for hitting the front end of an amp and I'm set up with those. Links early sound was more about power amp distortion....small amp turned up loud. Looking for a pedal that represents that sound. Agreed, folks attempt this sound with too much gain as mentioned earlier. Or nasty preamp distortion

MXR Super Badass Distortion, not an OD pedal (which is different). Gain just cracked; nice output dist sound at about 8:30 for me. (Truly goes rapidly crazy/elevated gain after about 8:45, but that's not what you want.) It also has tone controls (3) thar REALLY work. Just crack it and, of course, it doesn't hurt if you're also jumping on it at the guitar end tool - pedal can't do all the work.

Interesting about the MXR distortion pedal. Remember hearing a kid on YouTube that had a really cool sound playing Lookin Good by Magic Sam...I thought I gotta find out what that gear is. Cheap strat, fuzzface turned virtually off and a fender frontline amp. Hey ho.

Nothing beats a cranked low-wattage supro with trem. That's the sound right there.

But on my big clean amp for gnarled blown-tone, consider using a fuzz pedal with a "bias" or "variac" knob to simulate dying batteries. Turn down your guitar volume and you get some moderate fuzz with little breaks and splats like a blown speaker. I used to use a smallsound/bigsound mini for this effect. now I use a home made fuzz face with a bias knob. very useful effect.

I'd concur with Wes, The MXR Super Badass can do this at it's lowest and lower gain settings. It's just a bit trashy too which helps.

Another pedal I'll throw into the suggestions, another that would probably be overlooked - The Aria Disnortion (yes, disnortion) by Pigtronix.
Effective three band EQ like the MXR. This pedal has a slight fuzzy signature to it but, once again, at it's lower gain settings does a wonderful job of emulating my vintage Supro amps. It's built to run cleanest at 18 volts but will run at 9 just fine and for this type of use it sounds better at 9 volts. This is one of those gain pedals that can also be used to add or accentuate clear twang as well if wanted, especially if you dial back the mid control a bit.
The only downside for some is that it is not built to run on battery.
I think these can be found fairly inexpensive used as they have become a bit of a sleeper pedal.

Cheers,
Jeff

I've always been into crappy distortion sounds since I was first playing amps at 15. These days there are so many great flaves of fuzz and overdrive available.
If you want to fake power amp distortion, Earthquaker Devices makes the Acapulco Gold, a one-knob distortion device that is a fixed op-amp overdrive, with only an output volume control. You can vary the distortion by turning the guitar volume down. It produces 48 dB of gain!!!
More subtle crappy distortion might be wreaked by a Germanium Treble Booster cranked into a lo-gain Germanium fuzz (like a Maestro FZ-1) turned down, the whole circuit tweaked with guitar volume attenuation. This can yeild some squishy, wetfart splatty gated sounds.
The new Carcosa fuzz from DOD has bias controls that will let you get some real blatt, and then there is the 5-knob Fuzz Factory from ZVex that will do all kinds of crazy fuzz and more straightahead distortion, with splat and fizzle anytime you like.

Squink Out!

Never thought about the MXR. I have the Super Badass Fuzz version which has a Variac control. I'll mess with that to hear what I can hear.
