We need a proper band pic, and need some inspiration. What we have now is the four of us standing around looking bored. Terrible.

Photo by the insanely talented R. Stacy Fenner at Trader Vic's Atlanta!

Nothing special here but it works.
We also have some with our band, work shirts.
It always seems like such a chore to get everyone together and in the mood for band shots. Remember when you were a kid and it was the coolest thing?

Cheers,
Jeff

I think that any promo photo needs to do a good job of conveying the type of vibe and type of music you play. The photo may be the only thing pulling people in. If you are a gonzo, goofy band, an uber-serious, aloof photo devoid of any humour is unrepresentative. Not that it is a bad thing, just unrepresentative.

Or you could just go with a brick wall background or standing on railroad tracks with gorilla arms or arms crossed along with the "Bleeding Cowboy" font like all bands seem to use! Big Grin

From above, the Atomic Mosquitos' "Meet The Beatles"-type of shadow portraits work because it is green with a fun logo. It just works.
Our band Mai Tai Surf hasn't arrived at an agreement about a representative photo yet so I worked with one of my bandmates to get at least a half-decent logo (my avatar) developed that includes elements of our gear.

Hire a creative photographer, pay them to take conceptualize(with your feedback and input) and take your photo.

Don't wear sunglasses in the photo.

You need good live shots, not promo photos. Hire a photographer to shoot your live show (not outdoors during the day, and make sure it is on a stage).

Having promo photos is cool, but surf bands getting booked is more important. Live shots, video, and songs will get you booked. Not a promo photo. If you guys are under 30, I would suggest promo photos. But again, hire somebody to take them/plan them. Photography isn't as easy as our cellphones make it seem.

It takes us forever to get into our Wabbit suits... Laughing

That is indeed the unmasked Mel Bergman of the Phantom Surfers, turns out he lives very close to me. We dropped the bass entirely and went with 2 guitars & drums before I dropped out. Don is back with the new lineup of the Seeds.
