"The song itself is a guitar-heavy instrumental track that captures the "way out west" vibe and theme of the album; it's a bit of early Sixties SoCal-inspired surf-style rock that owes more to the Truants, Thom Starr and the Galaxies or Zorba & the Greeks than to George Jones, Hank Locklin or Porter Wagoner.
This is no surprise, since Way Out West was co-produced by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, who recorded a well-regarded instrumental surf-rock album of his own—Surf-N-Burn (credited to the Blue Stingrays)—in 1997."

He sure is one heck of a guitar player. This track just oozes groove. I wonder how many instros are on his new album?

Great stuff for sure. Can't wait to check out the new album. I still keep Brad Paisley's "Play" in one of the slots in the CD player down in the "Boat Werx."
A lot of county and especially blue grass pickers are staggeringly good players.
Don't ya just hate that?............

Hmmmm, without doubt two of the best musicians on this planet, Marty Stuart and his right hand man Kenny Vaughn. Those two boys may be 100% country on their Tele's, but they are 100% skilled musicians that can cut through any wave.
Ivan, you found another great vid, like Bombassa.

I met Marty when we were both 13 years old. He was playing with Lester Flatt and I was playing with Jim and Jesse. He was already a hot picker back then. Jeez I'm feeling old!!

I LIKE it! He's one of many phenomenal pickers that can simply play anything; pretty decent fiddler too and, by accounts, pretty nice guy to boot. (Just needed the sound of a Winchester lever action & a shot at the end there, but The Penetrators have done that.)
If there are a sufficient number of instrumentals on this thing I will snag it and, like Ed, cue it up with 'Play!'.
Thanks Ivan!

Marty Stuart is a beast. I've noticed a surf tinge to the theme song of his show before. I like this quite a bit.

Just because someone has the chops doesn't make them a great songwriter.
As for this specific example, you'll have to forgive my inner Debbie Downer, but it all just sounds so cliche. It's too over the top with the galloping spaghetti feel, the right in your face tele twang, and the back and forth with the lap steel. I do, however, wish I had the stones to pull off those bedazzled jackets.
I realize the irony in those statements, also.
Please, if you like it, go on with your bad self though. Don't let me yuck your yum.

A few years ago, I read and interview where Marty Stuart mentioned they were working on an all instrumental album. Looks like that fell through. I'm a regular watcher of his show on RFD (now in reruns...up in the air if he will be back). Besides the surf inspired theme, he and the band has featured performances of WDR, an original called "Bat Patrol" and a spaghetti western piece for a movie soundtrack. I had hopes they were going to for it. I get the impression Kenny Vaughan is a surf music fan from his frequent trem dips and glissandi. Besides the Tele, he plays a Jaguar quite a bit, especially on the earlier shows.
I followed a link to their home page, and there is a video sampler of the rest of the album. A lot of it sounds psychedelic inspired. I get the impression they are going for the whole west coast '60s hodgepodge of surf, psych, Gram Parsons country rock, Nudie suit vibe. Should be a pretty interesting project.
Speaking of Telecasters, remember Elliot Easton's (The Cars) theory that most surf music was recorded on Telecasters? I believe he was obviously going by the plethora of exploitation generic surf and hotrod albums by various "groups" which were actually studio musician creations. Going by sheer volume, and the fact that Tele player Tommy Tedesco played on so many of these records, he may have an argument.

No sarcasm. Tone is in the ear of the beholder, so often, sometimes, whatever, some of the boys in the surf genre refuse to go outside the Strat/Jag box.
I am a Strat boy, but I use a Strat HT which many tell me has more of a sound like a Tele than a Strat with a trem. My HT definitely sounds different.

Having played during the First Wave, even though I was inland in Riverside, CA, but playing next door in Berdoo County, (both counties Red Neck during the day) then down to O/C and over to LA county, I don't ever recall anyone playing through a Tele.
Nonetheless, you made a good point, especially since a ton of records were cut outside the 4 counties mentioned above.
Even Dick, who was hillbilly inspired before getting some guys together at the Rinky Dink never played a Tele. I remember he had some goofy looking white Gibson or Gretsch before he got the Strat, maybe 1960, but nor much later or earlier. (I will get the exact brand name the next time I head to his dug out-he has it encased in his computer room)

I am also a fan of the show, but lost interest with too many re-runs. When I tune in on Saturday the announcer always states, new shows are in the working stage. Marty usually has some great old timers on the show.

It was a right handed Magnatone MKIV that was converted to lefty. It was at the HB Surf Museum for quite a while. This is the only pic I can find right now, although I've seen another.

That is exactly how it still looks. It has been propped up on the floor inside the same glass casket for several years.

One of these weekends I gotta go in my garage and look for a Beta Max tape Dick's dad gave me in the late 70's. It was a copy of a 8mm film of Dick performing on Town Hall Party in 1958 of 1959. For some reason I vaguely remember Dick is wearing cowboy clothes playing a trumpet, not a guitar. But, that was a long time ago, so my memory probably faded and I am wrong about the instrument. Maybe he was playing that goofy looking guitar shown here?
