Hi Guys.
Being a New Year I am aiming to be more focused on my playing and getting it somewhere. Coming from a jazz background (in recent years) I see those guys very focused with regular planned practising sessions. Do you guys have a practise plan or approach to working on your playing? How do you balance everyday life with working on your music day to day?
Please let us know as I am always interested in new approaches and others find works for them!

I practice everyday in a very systematic, regimented way. Not the most exciting or entertaining way ill admit, but it yeilds good results. In the morning I start by practicing arpeggios. I run through minor, minor 6, minor 9, diminished, major, major 9, dominant 7, major 7 arpeggios in every position on the neck. Then I practice harmonic minor, and phrygian dominant scales in every position. Then I'll practice different chord inversions. Then I'll improvise for about an hour over different chord changes, constructing lines while focusing on how the different shapes connect. I do this everyday. I practice very slowly and deliberately. This accomplishes two things; firstly I keeps me from practicing mistakes, and secondly it builds speed and accuracy much quicker by forcing you to think about the mechanics of your playing. This is especially true for tremolo picking; practice it s-l-o-w as possible. Paradoxically slow practice helps you play faster. After all that, I usually run through whatever songs I may be working on at the time, or something new I may have learned.

I play once or twice a day. I don't follow a routine or anything, I just play. I don't get a lot of pleasure from playing parts others wrote, although I do like arranging melodies I enjoy, and I don't like jamming. Mostly I focus on coming up with something new, or some new way to do it.
With everyday life, I don't balance playing with it well. Rarely do I sit down to 'finish' a song. I gather parts and then if the situation arises I will then focus to finish it, but I need a deadline for it.
I'm a late night creative, way too late night for an 8-5er.

I try not to practice too much. I think getting too good at guitar leads to advanced wankery. Best to work against your natural limitations, forcing you to find creative ways to make interesting music.
